A new UMass football stadium could reverse AAC unwanted interest, IMHO.

It will be interesting to see what happens first, the IPF for all sports or closing in the endzone. Can see both being completed in the next 2-3 years. The stadium does not look bad and hope the end zone can blend in as well as the new Football Performance Center.

I agree, it doesn't have to be a new football stadium... But if it is renovated accordantly, meaning with today's most impressive shiny whistles, I believe the AAC will show interest.

RE: UMass Football
AD Ryan Bamford gave an online chat today. Bob McGovern for 247Sports-Maroon Musket gave a good recap.

Quote:On whether McGuirk Alumni Stadium will be renovated:

Good question -- lots to consider there. I can tell you that it is our hope that we get to a point where we are playing most, if not all, of our games back on campus. The Patriots and Gillette Stadium have been GREAT partners but in the end, that's where college football belongs: on campus. Certainly, we need to upgrade that facility to reach our goals in that regard.

On finding a new conference for UMass:

The best thing we can do to prepapre ourselves for a possible conference realignment is to raise our profile and increase the visibility of UMass Athletics. So much of the D1 conference landscape is uncontrollable. We need to focus on the things we can control -- primarily our own success and how we represent our brand.

On playing UConn more often:

You're welcome. This is fun. Our goal is to play UConn as much as possible. It's a natural fit for all of our sports and would be a great regional rivalry for UMass. I think UConn feels similarly but I will be connecting with their AD soon and should know more about how we can build something that will work for both schools.

On a 13th game for football in 2016:

We could because of our game at Hawaii and the NCAA provision that allows a 13th game. We do not have any intention of doing so however because a 13th game would likely consume the only BYE date we have on the schedule.

On whether UMass will have an FCS Homecoming Game in 2016:

That is our goal. I feel good about that happening.

On whether UMass will schedule future big-name opponents:

In a word, yes. We hope to always build schedules that challenge our programs competitively and attract interest from our fan base and the perhaps other people in the Commonwealth who may not have consumed UMass Athletics events in the past. Bringing nationally recognizable programs like Miss State to Massachusetts is a good start.

On dropping "Amherst" from UMass-Amherst:

Good question. This will evolve over time but we are going to look closely at our brand standards and make sure we have a strong primary mark and as much brand presence as possible. Anyone who has heard me speak about our program in the last 2 months has heard me reference University of Massachusetts Athletics...as the flagship, I don't think we need to add Amherst.

On building an multi-purpose indoor facility:

Would be a game changer for all sports and something that is certainly on my radar. We will be looking at a feasibility study this summer and weighing all options for a facility of this type. Timeline TBD.

http://umass.247sports.com/Article/Bamfo...s-37804074

There were more from the chat and like to add this one as well.

Welcome. Would you say that the new facilities (football performance center, champions center) match up with other top facilities across the country?

Yes! They are game changing facilities -- as good as any we had at GT and as good as most Power 5 conference schools.

Adding Daniel Malone article from the Springfield Republican/MassLive
This article adds more body and additional statements as from Mark Whipple

Quote:Whipple mentioned something similar in his SiriusXM Radio spot last week. Constructing the new Football Performance Center and press box are just the first steps in what will have to be a major overhaul of the again McGuirk facility if UMass wants to be up to speed as an FBS program. Any future renovations figure to be tied closely with finding a new conference.

This should be a frightening statement for any UMass fan to hear, your AD is as unrealistic as many of you are. Hoping for some unforeseen event to cause another conference to swoop in and save you is not realistic.

The thing you should know about us by now compared to the rest of the MAC. We are an incredibly optimistic bunch.

If we played you this year, we'd kick your ass.

Sure sounds like UMass still has it in their head that they will not be upgrading McGuirk until they get a new conference. The problem is, they will find themselves ranked behind other schools who have already upgraded their stadiums and have already proven they can fill them. I don't think the "we will renovate/expand the stadium once we know we have a new destination" is going to work in conference realignment. Its likely not having a viable on campus stadium will be the reason they are passed over. It wont matter if they promise to fix it.

He has to say those things right now as there are a lot of moving pieces. UMass requested 578 Mill, the House passed a 518M budget and the Senate passed a 538M budget. The board of trustees just voted on a 4.9% increase on tuition and fees.

http://dailycollegian.com/2015/06/17/uma...dent-fees/

COA article came out, new AD and President etc. Seems like a divide and conquer strategy. First get the IPF through the feasibility study this summer (starts next week) and built for 2016. Then stadium expansion in 2016-18. These are my guesses but we are in a tough spot with all games except one will be at Gillette for 2016. After that we are OK with games on campus and hopefully expansion.

A lot will ride on this years performance and attendance. Feel very good about this year so optimistic.

Our football schedule is solid for the next few years, certain people might not want to hear it but I think UMass doesn't need saving right now.

Agreed. They need a 30k stadium on campus before the AAC would look at them. Gillette is nice, but too far away for them to get consistent attendance.

you've got no stability, no rivalries, no conference championship, no bowl guarantees and no TV deal, how do you expect to win recruiting battles without all that? Not to mention you're earning $1M less as Indy/A10 compared to full MAC, plus significant increases in travel costs.

Is this sustainable long term? Of course not, but you're not worried because the Conference Fairy is going to come along and rescue UMass.

Please realize that Bamford has only been in the position for a short time so far and has already managed to work a near miracle to get a decent, if not pretty good, home schedule thrown together for 2016 when it had been down to a single game prior to that. He also stated in that interview that he wants to try to schedule UConn as much as possible and plans to reach out to the AD to try and get something going (in not just football too...it would be great to play them in basketball again as well).

He realizes the stadium needs to be upgraded. Whipple is taking the team into the non-pathetic range.

Are things entirely peachy right now? Of course not. But the situation isn't dire just yet.

Hell, their stadium needs indoor plumbing before the AAC will look at them.

The capacity is only one small piece of this puzzle.

Really no rivals, we are playing both UConn and Boston College. No money, we are receiving more money than the original deal with the MAC. No TV, unlike most MAC teams we have 99% of the equipment needed to be on NESN and Comcast Sports.

True it is not a long term plan, but we have faith that we are going to have a very good Football season. Remember 2012 was our FBS transition year and just getting close to the 85 scholly limit. Last year we won 3 and lost 5 close games. There is a statistic if you lose 4 or more close games, 85.9% of teams improve the following year. We have a quarterback with an arm, receivers to catch and a veteran offensive line.

Sept 19th should be a very interesting game of UMass offensive against Temple's defense.

Looking forward to the season and wish we be playing you this year. Have to settle for you visiting us in 2017.

The sky is falling. Did we have rivalries in the MAC after Temple left? How would a team that isn't in a conference have a conference championship? The MAC teams were fine making under a million forever. The only thing is the bowl gaurentees, but since every 6-6 team can go to the KY Jelly Bowl I'm not that worried about it.

RE: UMass Football
Ohio is a peer and the only MAC team to schedule a home and home with us. Their bowls are OK, CUSA slightly better. For Football, the MAC was a nice place to get our feet wet. Bantering with MAC fans is all in good fun. However will forever be grateful to the MAC and Temple for taking us into the FBS world.

No risk no gain, going to the MAC for all sports was no risk, but we needed to protect UMass Basketball and hoping for a conference with more teams on the east coast.

You create rivalries by playing the same teams every year and by competing with them for championships, this is impossible with an Indy schedule.

Every bowl has secondary conferences as backups, UMass won't go to a bowl unless literally every other eligible team in FBS is already in. You're not worried because you don't understand the situation.

I think you don't understand the situation, you're just desperate for UMass to fail.

ND v USC is one of the biggest rivalries around.
