How can you use 'historically' and 'uab football' in the same sentence?

Yeah, there's some history there. #116 of active div IA teams in total wins... woo hoo!

Since 96, how many wins has Rice had ...and how many has UAB had?

In that time frame, Rice has as many winning seasons and more 8-win seasons than UAB.

At the beginning of the season, it was 49-47 in favor of UAB.

A whopping two victories - yippee!

Now, how many bowls has UAB been to in their history?

Hint: Not quite as many as the number mentioned above!

Now there, STL Blazer: answer the question. I'll even let you use the hint...

Is that like "we won less over the last ten years than UAB"? A team that didn't even have a D1 team eleven years ago?

I'm amazed that Rice still has anyone who would trash talk after so many years of losing. Owljacket suggests that we don't have much of a "history" in college football. Certainly, Rice has a rich history. I think ya'll won some bowl games about 500 years ago.

Anyway, when Saturday's game passes into "history", it will most likely resemble Rice's more recent history - a Loss! 03-nutkick

UAB - 100
Rice - 0

(The only reason my prediction won't come true is that Watson Brown won't let it.) Good Luck, anyway! :)

A Rice fan talking smack about football is just plain silly. You do realize we're talking about FOOTBALL, right? Baseball season is still a couple months off my friend.

Yes, but Rice has a qualifier......Ken Hatfield is their coach.

Ken Hatfield makes Watson Brown look like Vince Lombardi, Pop Warner, and Amos Alonzo Stagg all rolled into one.

Ken Hatfield has done something Watson Brown couldn't manage to do when he was at Rice: actually have a winning season.

An unwillingness to cheat kept his career at Clemson short.

This is what ended Hatfield's tenure at Clemson

Recruiting blunders. Preferring Nealon Greene over Tommie Frazier because "Nealon is the better player" He quit recruiting Western NC to concentrate on in state prospects because "We owe it to SC kids to give them a shot"....despite the fact that SC has never produced enough 1-A talent for even one school, much less two. Prior to Hatfield, Clemson had pretty much owned Western Nc recruiting, and Western NC was predominately Clemson country fan base wise. This blunder is what started UNC's rise under Mack Brown, as they were now able to get bluechip talent they would have never gotten before. At this time, Clemson still struggles to even talk to talent out of Western NC, as many coaches remember that Clemson totally abandoned the kids there under Hatfield.

Hostile relationship with IPTAY. You don't piss off the people who pay your salary and ensure that your tiny school can compete with the big buys resource wise. His unwillingness to do the "meet and greet" deals that coaches are expected to do for booster organizations was the beginning of the end.

Demanding a contract extension during the season when the AD told him any negotiations would be done after the season was over, with the general feeling that he was coming off a 5-6 season, and hadn't shown any improvement on the field to warrant an extension of his contract, which still had two years remaining. Hatfield pitched a fit and quit.

Winning 5 games with a team that had won 9 the season before. That 1992 team was loaded with NFL talent, but the lack of flexibility in Hatfield's offense led to blowouts (20-6 to NCSU, 53-23 to Maryland) and inexcuseable losses to pathetic teams (20-16 to a Bill Lewis led GT team, 24-13 to a Sparky Woods led South Carolina team)

Broken promises every year to "open up the offense" Hatfield was even more conservative than Danny Ford...which is saying a lot because Ford's Clemson teams rarely passed more than 10 times a game. Every year he'd say "We need to open up the offense" then come gametime it would be option left, option right, dive up the middle and punt. By 1992 teams knew all they had to do was play single coverage on the two wideouts...and put everybody else in the box to shut us down. Things came to a head in the season opener against a very poor UNLV team and Hatfield's piss poor offense could only muster 24 points. The sad thing is, that would be one of only three games all year that we could honestly say we won and didn't get lucky that the other team screwed up. The GT (16-13), NCSU (20-16), Duke (13-10), Virginia (23-14), and South Carolina (16-13) wins were all a case of a late turnover deep, or boneheaded playcalling by the other team handing us the win. One of the defensive players, I can't recall who it was...maybe Dexter McCleon, said the defense should divorce the offense because of a lack of support.

Those are the reasons Hatfield didn't work out at Clemson. Much the same reasons most of the Rice fans today are thinking it's a time for change in Houston as well.

In the second half of our game 2 weeks ago, we outscored Texas in the second half 10-9.

Granted, this was against UT's scrubs, but their scrubs are better than anything we'll see this weekend. (Granted this may not be a fair comparison - we don't know how we'd match up with Crimson Tide scrubs; I gues we'll find out this weekend 03-razz)
