When we first got married my wife said she would cut the grass as long as I handled edging, weedeater work, etc. She said she always wanted to mow growing up but her dad wouldn't let her because she was a girl.
That lasted all of one summer. She hasn't cut a blade of grass since and we've been married 21 years this year.
My wife loves cutting the grass. She says it's good exercise. Sometimes I admit I worry that it makes me look like an ******* to the neighbors though.

I don't think my wife has ever even touched a lawn mower. Lucky you. Some people hate cutting grass but I use it as "me" time away from other distractions that gives me time to think.
That's what my workshop is for. If the wife comes down to complain about something I turn on the table saw, router, sander, etc. and she gets the point.

Honestly if it would get me out of having to cut grass they could think it makes me look like a fairy. I believe I would rather get kicked in the nuts by a mule than cut grass, especially with a push mower like I have to use.
Hopefully the plan works out and we move out to the country when y youngest graduates. For whatever reason I don't have as much of a problem getting on the tractor and bush hogging. I might even splurge for a gang reel mower.

it actually does the opposite. I've seen some of my neighbors go into the house and pull their wives out and point at what she is doing. This is usually followed by an angry look and back into the house!
I don't mind mowing either been doing it since I was 10. But, my wife is adamant that she does it just for that 45 min to an hour of no kids whinning.

She's using the same reasoning I use. It's an escape.

RE: Time to ditch the lawn?
haven't read the entire thread. we don't have a lot of land and we purposely got rid of any grass. we started native prairie grass from seed and threw them out back. around here (cincinnati) we haven't had to water the plants/ vegetable garden much and our rain barrel is almost pointless. but you can't predict this things. but i absolutely agree with california instituting a ban on water for vanity's sake. at my house we take pride in our native plants and i'm not against a well thoughtout unnative landscape, but you shouldn't force water to make something grow in the desert. and cali's natives are out of this world

For me cutting the grass isn't the problem it's the picking up. I hate the look of dead grass on top of mowed grass. Especially after a couple of weeks when it needs edging. Ugh!
But, I talk about it but I couldn't live in an apartment complex. I need some space of my own.

I just bag the grass so don't have to worry about the dead grass, etc. Also works as sort of vacuum in the fall for getting rid of leaves.

I do too, , just forgot to mention it. I used to hate trimming the bushes but now I use the blower with the vacuum attachment and it's a breeze. After a while my arm gets tired but it sure beats using a rake. Since I have rocks around the bushes the suction with this attachment doesn't have the power to suck them up, just the leaves and small twigs.

I need to get one of those blowers that is also vacuum with bag. I don't mind trimming the bushes, but I absolutely despise cleaning up the mess. Another thing I hate are yellow jackets. I have discovered at least 5 underground nests in my yard so far this summer. Damn things don't like lawn mower vibrations and have let me know it twice.

Been there, done that. They don't like tractor or fire truck vibrations either.
We were cutting brush for a new fence line one time when I went knee deep into a yellow jacket nest. Got hit thirteen times. Took a gallon of kerosene and the weed torch and took care of that problem.

I've been told to hit them with gas and a match; however, the underground nests are near highly flammable pine straw, etc so that would probably be a bad idea. I've resorted to flooding them via a garden hose down the nest hole and conventional sprays. Seems to work for a while and then another nest pops up eventually.

Creeping Charlie is tough. I had to get a special spray bottle to get rid of it. Scott's Weed and Feed is not enough.

Ortho Weed-be-gone. I used it this year, and the results were shockingly good. totally gone.

A Mulching blade cuts it up really fine. We don't bag here.
