Hiroshima & Nagasaki
(Consider this a flashback to the old ESPN board, where this was an annual thread.)

Justified or not?

I vote justified.

Sucks as all get out but what was the alternative, an invasion of the Japanese mainland?

Torn.

I can't be for something that killed 100,000 people (or whatever).

At the same time, if it didn't happen, a similar amount of Japanese probably would've died and add 50,000 Americans had it not happened.

Despite some Internet memes to the contrary, best estimates are that several times that many would have been killed in an invasion of Japan, and not very likely Japanese would have surrendered without an invasion.

Even most of the Japanese leadership thought it was justified.

Justified. Don't forget what happened at Pearl Harbor...BEFORE we were even at war.

Justified.

One of my Grandfathers would have been part of the invasion and the other had volunteered to transfer from occupation duty in Austria to serve in the Pacific.

Justified. Japan was given multiple chances to surrender. Bill Whittle breaks it down far better than I ever could.

Totally justified. If we had to invade. Thousands of lives more would have been lost. The Japanese would have armed every single person to defend there homeland.
They would have done similar to Russia in the respect of no retreat (by cowardice) or you get shot by your own guys.

I agree with what others have said.

It ended up saving Japanese lives in the long run.

Whoooeeyy, that was beautiful. He told that idiot off. That he's a Libtard without a braincell in his head but only a voice and no substance.

Yup, and the plans were already well underway. My Dad would have been part of it.

Absolutely justified. Long run it saved lives overall.

I took the tour of Truman's "Little White House" in Key West once. A lot of important decisions affecting WWII were made there. Fascinating stuff.

When I saw that clip had Stewart in it I turned it off. He's a tool and an idiot.

How does killing 200, 000 civilians save lives?
