Good thing the news isn't at all useful metric in which to gain an accurate representation of things like this. Stories like this make the news because they know it scares people and scared people pay attention to the news. Why do you think you hear of every horrible tragic murder? It's not because they are at all statistically relevant to the average person, but because it sells papers.

Yeah, probably the same reason we never hear anything about the gobs of folks who are killed in gang violence every day. Doesn't sell papers.

You're absolutely right. Same reason we had nothing but Ebola coverage for months, all the while tens of thousands of people continued to die of preventable diseases like heart disease, diabetes, etc.
