I'll go Marshall 38, USM 28. We are not ready to win this type of game just yet. Hope I'm wrong.

It always pays to remind yourself that you MAY get what you wished for. And for me, that was (and remains) a good USM team to return to football relevance over in the West. We are just a better conference, overall, when the Eagles are one of the top teams. Well, you certainly are climbing back, quickly, and what may have looked like an easy win at the Joan when the schedule was first published, is a toss up, in my opinion. It's certainly an important game for both teams!
I've already heard Doc talk a little about this game, and he knows this is going to be a fight on Friday night. He started talking about it before he left the field after the ODU win.
A great game for C-USA. I do think we will win, narrowly, but I also think it's going to be a tough outing for both teams.

USM fans need to give the Golden Eagles more credit. Your team went into Lincoln, Nebraska and put up a great effort against the Cornhuskers. That is why I'm not writing them off.

Could be surprised but think USM is still a year away...Like our chances better next year in Hattiesburg against the Herd.

Yeah congrats on losing by 8 to 2-3 Nebraska. You'll probably win the national title.

QB-USM by a bunch
Running backs- USM because of quality of depth
OL-USM because of pass protection
WRs-definitely USM
TEs-don't know anything about MU's
Defense
DL-a wash but I like our depth
LBs-MU by a nice margin
DBs-don't think either is world beaters
Safeties-USM if all are healthy
Marshall plays hard at home and that is an advantage. On the road this is a win for USM because MU is a different team on the road. At Huttington we will get Marshalls best shot no doubt.
Wild card is of course turnovers just as it was in 2011.
My guess...USM 38-MU 17.

So, Marshall is 31st in scoring defense, Southern Miss is 80th.
Marshall's 19th in the nation against the pass, and Southern Miss is 88th.
Marshall secondary has first team all-conference caliber players like Lang and Tindal, but you'll give the edge to USM... if they're healthy?
Marshall has a championship caliber defense... And they've been on the field a lot this year to prove that.
FYI, our TE is sophomore Ryan Yurachek, and he'll be on an all-conference team this year. And I'm not trading Johnson and Pittman for any RB duo in this league (or any other league... Well, Ok, I'll take that LSU running back...).

Marshall's defense by a wide margin. USM's offense by a small margin. Home field is big for Marshall.

Purdue is no Ms State.
Ohio is no Nebraska.
Kent is not even an equal to Tx State.
So.....yes we will scorer 38 on your "championship caliber defense".

We are 4th in the country in pass efficiency defense, so it will be a good match up with your QB.
Here's what strikes me as odd, USM was the nasty defense and we had a history of the up tempo offense when we joined the league. Now the tables are completely turned.

RE: **** Southern Miss @ Marshall live game thread ****
I actually heard this used to talk about the conclusion of the Cincinnati Reds season, but probably applicable to Marshall's offense right now... But thus far, the whole of the Marshall's offense is not greater than the sum of the parts.
Van Horn is a 2014 first team all-conference that should be anchoring a line that some were touting during the off-season as being better this year than last. We have an all-conference caliber TE. Allen, McManus, Reeves, Foster and others have talent at WR. We have Johnson (though fighting injury again) and Pittman running downhill....and we have a freshman that 3-0 as a starter and has made some plays... Yet we don't have consistence or a true identity on offense. Our offensive line had huge expectations, and that's been the disappointment. On paper, our offense should be at the top of the league, but there's still work to do.
I can't believe that after this week, we are halfway through the regular season. I do feel like sometime shouting out that the rumors of Marshall's demise are greatly exaggerated. Every year is always different in college ball and there's a different chemistry and a 25% roster turnover. I do think this Marshall team, from the coach down, is taking a long view, business-like approach "to improving each week", and may not feel like it's back is in a corner and doing whatever it takes to scratch, claw, and fight its way to a victory. It will be interesting to see the intensity this week to see if Marshall is really coming out to win, or if we "pace ourselves" in our own improvement journey. I see this happening a bit this week and think USM may come in with the "fire in the belly" advantage similar to what WKU did to us last year - Marshall came out to play another game, WKU came to play a statement game... And by the time one realizes it, it's too late.

In the end you either win or lose. Everything else is just excuses.

Per Sagarin Predictor updated today, Kent and Texas State would be a push on a neutral field.
And you would open as a slight underdog to Purdue... and Ohio.

Sorry.

Pretty sure that 8/11 starters on offense are either FR or SO. Think about that for a few minutes.
This offense is extremely young. I noticed the walk on WR who is a true FR got some reps yesterday as well. Because of this, I fully expect them to improve each week. If we can get some things going on offense then I think we have a shot. Our defense is really good, and they also seem to be improving each week.
