This would be a gong show. I can't believe he got hired for another high-profile gig following his shenanigans in New Mexico.

Quote:Edsall, a Syracuse alum who grew up in Pennsylvania, called Maryland his "dream job" in his introductory press conference. But his first season was nightmarish, with numerous players opting to leave rather than play for him, and the team finishing 2-10. The Terps went 4-8 the following year, and grumbling grew loud before a 7-6 season in 2013-2014 quieted critics at least partially. Despite the collapse of late 2014, Maryland had its first win over Penn State in 53 years, another win at Michigan and a respectable rookie year in the Big Ten.

Off the field, he'd also earned praise for improving the program's academic standing and avoiding off-field issues -- along with the aforementioned recruiting class next to arrive next year. And for the most part, sources said, the current players like Edsall personally. But he lost their support with his program-wide rigidness -- at times he's taken names off jerseys and banned baseball caps, 'do' rags, untrimmed facial hair and earrings in efforts to stifle selfish individualism -- along with his refusal to play more aggressively and tendency to blame them for losses.

He sounds like a great fit for Rutgers. Schiano was known as a rigid control freak. No way we are going to get Chip Kelly or even Schiano back for the money we can afford to pay. Edsall on the other hand, might come cheap. He isn't a great coach, but all things being equal, he did a good job at UConn and Md of going up against RU in games and recruiting.

No he didn't. For all the grief Schiano gets he was still 5-1 against Edsall from 2005 to 2010. Guy couldn't recruit a QB to save his life.

If Rutgers is gonna be cheap about a head coach at least get a guy like Fleck who can recruit.

We really are likely looking at a very similar coaching list. I have heard Fleck as someone who the Terps could look at. Battle for recruits. Battle for coaches. They way the game went down last year. I can easily see this becoming an important game for both our teams.

Fleck is Coach Hype, in my opinion. He hasn't been able to prove he can build Western Michigan into a winner. Bill Cubit had a solid program at WMU, so it's not like Fleck was walking into a terrible situation there.

My take on Fleck is give him 5 years, I think he's going to be a great college coach in the future, he has the recruiting part down even with his stupid row the boat thing. I think Fleck would fit right in at one of the Indiana schools. He's not the solution for Maryland or Rutgers just yet.

RE: BREAKING: Maryland to Fire Randy Edsall
Here is a list ( I DID NOT MAKE THIS). I'm copying and pasting, it's kinda long but I think it's a good/interesting list. The original poster is s.r.genovese on Testudo Times.

Here’s the list of candidates I would look at if I were the AD. Preface: if you want a "big name coach" you’re gonna be disappointed with my list. But on the other hand if you want a "big name coach" I’m 99 percent sure you’re going to be dissapointed by Maryland’s hire anyway so might as well prepare to be let down.

Tom Herman: He’s my ideal candidate. He’s 4-0 at UH, he coached in the Big 10, and he has Texas connections. He’s 40 and was the main playcaller for last years OSU national championship team (that offense is now a dumpster fire). Donwsides? he already makes 1.3 million, he has coached primarily in Texas (other than OSU) and probably wants to build a career there. He is already being talked about as the next UT coach. So unless we offer him a boatload of money he will probably stay where he is. And even if he took the job, he would always be on the lookout for the next opening in Texas.

Justin Fuente: His Memphis team won the AAC last year, finished #25 in the country, won a bowl against BYU. He’s 39 and also has a background in Texas (was TCU’s offensive coordinator). He runs the typical exciting Big 12-type offense. The team is now 5-0 and will probably win the AAC again. He’s a great candidate and he’ll bring an exciting offense to the Big 10. On the other hand he already makes 1.4 million and might be eyeing a Big 12 job unless we pay him a lot of money.

PJ Fleck: Not as excited about him as others. He’s young, fiery, but that doesn’t make him a great coach. He’s only 34 and has already spent time in the NFL as a WR coach for the Bucs. Overall, his record at WKU is 10-19. The best his team ever finished in the MAC was 3rd. If we’re gonna hire a guy from a small conference, can we make sure he’s able to win that conference before bringing him to the Big 10?

Phil Montgomery: I was interested in him when there were discussions about firing Edsall last year. He was Baylor’s OC at the time and he got hired at Tulsa since then. They’re 2-2 but I still think he’s a strong candidate and worthy of hiring.

Scott Frost: He’s Oregon’s OC and he’s a good one. He is a Nebraska grad and didn’t get the open job last year, but apparently Nebraska wasn’t interested in anyone without HC experience. He also might be feeling a little less comfortable with his position now that Oregon is struggling a little bit. If you don’t remember, he was the QB for the 1997 Nebraska National Championship team.

Bo Pelini: He’s a realistic candidate but I’m not very excited about him. He’s a pretty good coach and I think he would be a good hire but I also don’t think he’s the type of hire that is going to bring Maryland to prominence. I see him more on the level of Freidgen (which is better than what we have now, obviously). He did well at Nebraska, but they have a very strong alumni base and football history. I have a hard time seeing him recreate that success at Maryland. Plus, he wouldn’t really excite boosters at all. All in all a safe hire but I would rather get a coach with a higher ceiling.

Charlie Strong: Right now, everything I’ve heard from people at UT (I live in Dallas) is that Strong is safe as long as he isn’t embarassed 70-0 by OU and he doesn’t go 2-10. But, if he does get fired, I think he’d be an alright fit. He runs a clean program and he’s an ace recruiter (especially in Florida). He developed Teddy Bridgewater into a nice QB and if UT gave him time, I’m pretty sure he’d be fine. OU upset UT and so he most likely won't be fired this season unless UT just get killed by Baylor and Texas Tech. I added this part and was not original to the post

Unrealistic Candidates:

Kirby Smart: He’s gonna get an SEC job whenever he wants it. I doubt he gives us consideration.

Bob Stitt: I wish he were realistic because I would love to see what he would do with D1 level talent. I can’t see KA taking a risk on an FCS coach with only a year of experience though. I think he would be a great hire.

Frank Reich: He’s never had a college coaching gig so I’m not sure he’s a great choice. But just because he hasn’t done it doesn’t mean he can’t and he’s done pretty well working as the Chargers’ OC.

Jim Tressel: The University nixed Mike Leach because he was perceived as risky. Almost no chance they hire Tressel with his background.

Tom Herman would be a home run. As a longtime Houston Oilers/Tennesse Titans fan, the mere mention of the name Frank Reich gives me hives.

Wow this is the weekend for coach openings. Both USC's coaches are gone today with Southern Cal's fired and Spurrier announcing and immediate retiring.
