Carl Franks had 3 ACC wins in his first season at Duke.

True but he didn't win anymore after that. I assume Doeren will at least win one more. Regardless, starting 3-15 in the ACC is ridiculous.

Playing Clemson and FSU every year without equal talent typically lends itself to losses. And usually they beat you not just in the game with them, but the next week.

I'm not defending last night or last Saturday. That ultra conservative play, stupid penalties, and a QB who was supposed to be good but instead is throwing to moles or gophers can't be defended. I suspect that a number of the team did not like what happened Shad and sees it as unfair. Nevertheless we really have no one to blame but ourselves for the losses.

As far as the comparison to Duke, that's the talent level TOB recruited in his last three years at State and when he was fired he left us no G-5, let alone P-5 level QB.

One of the main roots of NC State's problem is cheapness.

NC State has been operating on the cheap since Everett Case died/retired and died in 1965. So there's not much to work with compared to other major schools.

The booster club is nearly dead last in in per person donations and our only two billionaires don't donate to athletics. IIRC only FSU trails NC State in per person contributions.

State's had only two competent Chancellors in place since old man Caldwell retired in 1975 (one of the men behind the Research Triangle Park) - one was a victim of faculty coup and the other is Woodson who has been in place about 6 years.

State has had three competent AD's in the same time frame, but one was cheap as Hell - Willis Casey - his replacement Jim Valvano was crucified and from 1991 to just a few years ago we had clowns as AD's until Yow's arrival in the summer of 2010.

TOB need to be fired when she got there, but she had a more immediate problem in basketball and at State, being a good Christian man and having a tie to the military, even if you were a desk soldier, gives you a 2-3 year pass with a large chunk of the fan base. We have a faction that would rather lose with imaginary honor than win in the real world.

But like turning an aircraft carrier, it takes time and the hole at State was so deep that major hires of top names are not possible and therefore these hires are crap shoots that may or may not work out because there is not enough money to hire a real name and the entourage he needs.

RE: Open Thread - Week 6
Come on Pack. So O'Brien can win with sub par players but Doeren can't? You do realize that BC and Syracuse also have to play Clemson and FSU every year right? Both Schafer and Addazio have far better conference records than Doeren. To top it off, they are challenging themselves out of conference. BC played USC last year and Syracuse is playing LSU this year.

It's not a talent issue. If that were the case, you'd be struggling to beat even lower FBS teams like South Alabama, Old Dominion, etc. However, you crushed them like they didn't belong on the same field. There's enough talent on the team to at least go 4-4 or 3-5 every year in the ACC.

There is no way PJ is getting fired after beating UGAg and winning the first BCS Bowl since Bobby Dodd.

He'd need another 3-4 year run of 6-6 ... but he's well on his way to that this year. There is NOBODY left on the depth chart at A-Back. Between dismissal, graduation, and injury ... they're down NINE SPOTS on the roster at A-Back from last year. If you are currently enrolled at GT with eligibility left and you can block ... you should go see PJ. You might be able to play A-Back. Byerly is also out for the season. All we need is for JT to get injured and they won't win another game. It is already zero margin for error to make a bowl game.

Put another way ... I wasn't kidding when I said enjoy the bye week Clemson. I'm not even turning the game on. I banked my victory for this week when UGAg's season got worse by losing Chubb on the very first play. Bad weeks for UGAg are all I'm rooting for at this point.

He isn't winning a bcs game this year. So he wouldn't be fired "after" doing that.

He's a garbage high school coach and gt knows it.

MEDIOCRE AS CRAP for 5 of last 6 seasons. Nearly indistinguishable last 6 years from gailey's 6.

Or maybe they're not good - for the fifth season out of the last six.

Swag I think you made the right decision not to turn the game on, it's already getting ugly. Like 26-3 early in the 2nd ugly.

Looks like BC and Wake are replaying the Wake -VT game from last year...0-0 at the half.

Clemson up 26-3 on the Jackets after 20 minutes? Clemson isn't THAT good. Louisville struggled mightily on offense against the Tigers but were in the Clemson game till the end, losing by 3. What is up with Georgia Tech?

Duke killed us.

Compliments to the Blue Devils, unlike PSU, they took us seriously.

To be fair, you guys did score on a kickoff return to cut a 10 point lead to 3. Otherwise, you would have only score 10 points.

This year GT does not match up well with Clemson's D.

I was considering all aspects of the game. Tech's offense isn't who gave up 26 points by the 2nd quarter. GT did just score but they were getting rolled in all aspects.

As for special teams play, that's part of the game. Kickoffs have hurt more than helped Louisville this year as they allowed a kickoff TD vs Houston that resulted in a 3 point loss. Also vs Louisville, 7 of NC State's 13 points were a result of starting a drive at the UofL five yard line after a long kickoff return. It's fairly common to have non-offensive scores in college play all things considered.
