I'm interesting to see if Pitt's recruiting picks up. They're in a tough area with Ohio State to the west. Penn St to the east. WV to the south.

RE: Pat Narduzzi tweaks Penn State
Franklin has called in to the Fan at least twice while they were discussing Pitt. I heard both calls with my own two ears. The first time, I thought it was a strange coincidence. The second time was just really strange all the way around. Also, the second time he did it, the hosts acted like they were surprised. Then, after they hung up with him, they were making fun of him for being so insecure and for how weird the whole thing was to them.

As for ignoring Pitt, Penn State has tried that tactic for years. Why do you think their slogan is "Unrivaled"? That is definitely in part a passive-aggressive shot at Pitt, which definitely still considers Penn State its chief rival.

Still, if Franklin wants media exposure in Pittsburgh he can always count on at least one of the questions revolving around the resumption of the Pitt/Penn State game. That was a BIG DEAL when Paterno ended that rivalry as a way to punish Pitt for not supporting his all sports conference idea and the people here are never going to let that go.

In the rest of the state, that is not an issue at all. Political strategist James Carville once famously described Pennsylvania thusly: "Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between."

He did not mean that as a compliment. However, neither is he wrong. Penn State is adored in the "Alabama" portion of the state. Absolutely beloved. However, in the major cities, the adulation mostly comes strictly from PSU alums. Most everyone else is either lukewarm towards them (usually pro fans) or flat out hates them (fans of Pitt, Temple, Notre Dame, Ohio State, etc.).

Everyone recruits Western PA. That's always been the case and it's true now too. Florida State's backup QB is from Pittsburgh and so is one of Alabama's starting WR's.

Ohio State and Penn State are definitely formidable recruiting rivals. Michigan and Notre Dame also recruit here with some success.

Still, Pitt typically gets most of the best local players. Pitt's problem has been its ability to get enough quality players out of surrounding recruiting grounds like Ohio, New Jersey and Delmarva. That will determine our fate. Also, Pitt MUST do a better job of recruiting Florida. That doesn't mean we'll be beating out any of the Florida schools but there are so many good players in that state that we absolutely should be able to land a handful of good players from down there each year.

As for West Virginia, they really aren't a major factor here in recruiting. They are definitely not as threatening as some of the other schools mentioned. Pitt has lost a handful of recruiting battles against them in the past decade - most notably Dravon Henry. However, for every recruiting loss, Pitt wins 20 such head to head battles. WVU has a better game day atmosphere but Pitt literally wins in every other category - usually by a mile.

Wow, Franklin backed down yesterday at his presser. Such awesomeness to see that man start the war of words w/ #DominateTheState, #107Strong and #UnRivaled just to back down when he gets punched in the mouth.

Great to see Narduzzi standing up and creating some waves. I have been very impressed with what he has done so far and think he will have PITT being a consistent major factor in the Coastal. Seems like a perfect fit. The ACC needs a good PITT program.

“I don't want to read into anything,” Franklin said Tuesday afternoon at his weekly news conference. “There's been comments and things that I've said in the past that people have read into. So I'm not going to read into anything.

“Happy for them and the success that they've had, but my focus is on Penn State completely, 100 percent. … There's a lot of good football being played in this state with Temple and Pitt and Villanova and Penn and East Stroudsburg, a lot of good football being played, and I'm happy for all of them. But I'm not going to read into anything else.”

“I think there's been other times in other things that have happened that people have read into things that were not there, looking to try to get hits on websites or try to create some drama that was never really there,” he said. “I’ve said this before. I've got tremendous respect for all the universities in this state. Is this a competitive business? No doubt about it. But I'm focused on Penn State.”

*** At the link it also talks about what Franklin said about recruiting in Maryland and New Jersey when he started at PSU.

Where's Temple? They're the best in the state.

Never thought I would live to see the day when Temple fields the finest College Football team in Pennsylvania.

JHG...take away the Penn St and the Notre Dame games...what is your hard core fan base right now? Trying to gauge and reset my bias from watching Temple in the 90's. I'm starting to come around to Temple being a nice bridge in the ACC with Maryland gone.

RE: Pat Narduzzi tweaks Penn State
It looks like Temple is averaging 45,242 attendance, and that's BEFORE the Notre Dame game. OTOH, that's only 3 home games, one being Penn State (a sellout -- 68,532)... so the other two home games average was 33,598.

Even w/o the Penn State game, that's better than BC, Duke, Syracuse and Wake Forest... with PSU, it's better than UVa, who's already had both Notre Dame and Boise State at home.

The Temple of today is 180 degrees from the Temple of the old Big East.

As for crowds, we had 35K+ for the Tulane game a couple weeks back and 32K for the UCF game last Saturday night. I can confirm this was actual attendance too.

Temple is also moving toward building a 35K+ stadium on campus with the ability to expand bigger if needed. They will also be able to play at the Linc for games if they play ND, Penn State, etc.

And congrats to Temple for the outstanding season they are having in their second class league. Keep it up and maybe one day you'll be able to average half of capacity of the stadium you rent.
