RE: Open Thread - Week 9
The only reason for having a rule to stop the clock in the final two minutes is to give the losing team a better chance to come back. It's similar to the rules in most sports leagues. It's an attempt to artificially create more end game excitement. It's similar to not calling intentional fouls in the last two minutes of a basketball game, or having the clock stop after a made basket.

Sports isn't about fairness. It's about entertainment. That's the reason for this rule.

ASU should have won going away but missed 3 FG's, allowed a kickoff TD, and let UO take it to OT on a miracle play. Then you open the door for horrific reffing. Officials fail to overturn a blown call on the field in the 3rd OT that gave UO a TD despite the receivers first foot down being clearly out of bounds.

I think the rule is, if either foot is down in bounds, it is a good catch. What the first foot does is irrelevant. In the NFL that is no catch.

The replay clearly showed that the only foot down was the one out of bounds when he caught the pass. Just another horrible PAC officiating call.

People can talk about the ACC refs being bad but compared to what else is out there they are pretty good. They are certainly a step up from the BE/AAC crews.

So the Oregon player's foot hit out of bounds before his butt landed in the endzone?

And ken, you don't get my out of bounds/clock stoppage comment at all. It should always stop when you go out of bounds; YOU WENT OUT OF BOUNDS!

It does stop. It just starts when the ball is ready for play instead of when it is snapped.

I think you are talking about a different call, one they got right. Here's the replay of the one I'm talking about.

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=14007437

They showed it a lot last night & his right foot was up & his left on the line when he gained position of the catch. The replay official let the call stand. There weren't any obstructions so a confirmation or reversal should have been made, I saw indisputable evidence to reverse it as did the guys calling the game.

I honestly can't tell if that left toe is down inbounds or not or if it's just barely hovering above the grass. I was talking about the TD catch that sent it to OT where the guy caught it in mid air while bumping into his own player and landed on his butt with both feet out of bounds. I didn't see a slow motion replay of that but that also looked close.

It does stop. It just starts when the ball is ready for play instead of when it is snapped.

It should stop completely. If they want to shorten the playclock on those plays, so be it. But the gameclock shouldn't start until the ball is snapped again.

A stupid rule.

Agreed.

The rule was instituted in an effort to "shorten the game" a couple of years ago. Marge, I thought you already knew that, the college football affectionado that you are.

A stupid rule.

Why shouldn't it start? What difference does it make if a runner is tackled one yard inside the line or one yard outside it? The play clock doesn't have to start right away. To say that it should stop is completely arbitrary - just as arbitrary as saying it should only stop in the final two minutes. Or that it should stop on an incomplete pass.

Should has nothing to do with it.

To me, the logical rule would be that the clock stops after every play, but only until the referee marks the ball ready for play, at which time it immediately starts again. That's regardless of whether the previous play was a pass or run, regardless where on (or off) the field the play stops, and regardless of how much time is left on the clock.

That was one heck of a catch. The replay showed that his butt hit first & then his feet landed out of bounds.

I recall the also stupid kickoff rule changes. Just not this. I didn't even know it was a thing until Miami fans were complaining about it Tallahassee in the final minutes and I couldn't explain it.

Why does everyone, especially those supporting schools new to the conference, make fun of Wake Forest? 19-17 nearing halftime.

I don't think it's "making fun" of wake when you point out their limitations and state they don't add financial value to the conference.

Is that what you're referring to?

What a pathetic half by UofL. A special teams blunder directly leading to opponent points for the 2nd week in a row, a safety, horrible penalties, and two plays with the worst secondary tackling you'll ever see.

You guys can always fire Grantham, steal $1,000,000 from UGAg, and thus reset your karma. Well, your karma outside of Petrino at least.
