I especially love how CMC was shut down.

You mean the bankruptcy sale?

Lon told me a different story which led to the closing spurred on by Berle's behavior.

Interesting. I'd love to hear it sometime. I left in 1980 and went to Scott, but when they got bought out I went back to CMC in 86. Was Salesman of the Year one year and went down with the ship at the Poplar Store. Did you work there too?

Yeah, I think it was by Sears. I think.

It was. And across the way a few doors north, wasn't there a leather coat store? There was also a Thom McAn shoe store.

Good call...can't remember the name of the leather store. But I think you are right.

Yes to all of the above.
There was also the Hickory Farms store as well, down towards Sears.

I think the toy store was named circus world. that was in the early 80s, so I don't know if it was one of the original stores.

That rings a bell...I remember Children's Palace in the mid 80's across the street from the mall for sure.

This is bringing back some old memories. I those stores as a kid and toward the end when I worked at Sears right before it started it's hard decline.

I LOOOOVED Service Merchandise.
They were across Yale from the mall, though, as where Children's Palace was across Austin Peay.

Along with Service Merchandise & Dowdle's, there was also Raiford's Shoes that had a big tree in the middle of the store for kids to climb, and Britling's Cafeteria down on the far end.

I couldn't tell you what I did this time last week, but for some reason I have all this minutiae burned in my brain.

Speaking of Dowdle, they are online only now? How did I miss that? Oh, my son grew up.

My very first job was at that Shoney's. 1973, I think.

Had a softball glove re-laced at that Dowdle. Excellent job as usual by them. Had another one re-laced 20 years later at the one of Gtown Rd.

I really liked Service Merchandise, forgot about them.

There was a Tuxcedo rental place by Goldsmith's. Can't recall the name. Mitchell's maybe?
