Why send us to the west when we're doing everything we can to fashion ourselves into a doormat?

I'm a 100% boring homebody, but for my wife's and kids' futures; I don't think that I would turn down a $2.5 million a year increase.

There's not a 2.5 million dollar difference. Temple is taking care of Rhule.

Temple is renegotiating his contract right now. $2M+ for the next 10 years guaranteed or $4M for 4 years and if the team under-performs, he's done?

If you are making $7 million a year and you were offered $9.5 million to move across the country and relocate your family you would do it? Disrupt their schooling and social life?

The numbers get to be too big for it to make a difference anymore, IMO.

This is a big step for the AAC in my opinion. Having two coaches, Rhule and Herman, turn down BIG name P5 teams shows how good this conference is.

True, I remember a time in my life where I literally jumped up and changed for a pay increase of 7.85 to 10.15 and was very happy. And recently have turned down a offer for six figures to relocate to the west coast because it was not best for me in my wife.

Why? Some people value integrity over material things. It's rare in this world where it seems everyone is trying to out earn everyone else, but it does happen.

Congrats to Temple. I have much respect for Mr. Rhule. 04-cheers

People turn down pay that would have far more of an impact than a leap from 2 million to 4 million can make.

Go from 50,000 to 500,000 and you're in a different zip code financially. 500,000 to 1,000,000 million not so much.

It has been relatively rare in the sporting world.

I think that is going to change with AAC schools throwing around 2-3 million to keep coaches. MAC schools are even talking about Brinks Trucks showing up on campus.

More you'll see a coordinator like Georgia went with or a retread like Miami Fl is getting.

“This is hard man,” Rhule admitted. “This is really, really hard. People start coming to your door and say hey, ‘I got four million dollars.’ But you know what, I’d rather coach Temple’s kids. I love these kids. I’d rather coach here and coach Temple’s kids then just sell my soul for four million dollars. That is the truth and that’s as honest and open as I can be with you guys.”

This is why we love this guy!!
That is all fine and dandy! I can remember Jack Bicknell at Boston College stating that he would never leave BC for another program. Unfortunately, BC gave him the boot when he stopped serving up winning seasons.
It's a tough gig, I give Coach Rhule credit for sticking with the program. But don't think for one second that Temple wouldn't fire him on the spot for non-performance.

I think this a huge deal for the conference, as well as Temple and Houston. The league needs an identity beyond a stepping stone for coaches. Sounds like both of these coaches sincerely have bought into the conference and their respective schools.

I hope the talking heads mention this on Saturday.

If he wins 6+ games a year, people are happy. If he doesn't win 8+ consistently most places, he's gone within 4 years.

I dont know about that. They leave Fran Dunphy in place, and he underperforms each bball season.

RE: Rhule staying in Philly...
Temple is going to push Rhule almost up to where Herman is headed. I expect Rhule to come in around $3 million. That's a doubling of the contract that he just signed back in June.
Also keep in mind that in 2014 he was only making $680k, June 2015 $1.3 mil, soon $3 mil ...
Can't find fault with Temple if we do boost him to close to 3 mil ...

So the Mizzou $4 mil is better on paper but there are other factors to consider.

Like that fact that the place is in the grips of a 1960's style muddle headed meltdown.

Is Rhule waiting for Penn State? I can understand turning down $4 million at a crap school. He better be careful. He's benefitting from down UCF, ECU and Cincy teams

In the article, Rhule specifically cited NFL teams. Missouri is just a nightmare and needs a turnaround culturally. A retread is the best option in this case.

RE: Rhule staying in Philly...
Congrats to Temple fans ! I posted in an earlier thread that I thought he really fit at Temple. Great news that he really believes he fits at Temple !

I agree that pay increases lose value as salaries increase. For example, making 2 mil. more per year means a lot more when you're currently making $500,000/ per year vs already making $2,000,000/ per year.

Also, an older coach that has been around values a good program/university fit more than a younger coach who hasn't lived through a bad fit.

I also want to take this opportunity to say how much I've enjoyed seeing Temple have this great season. After all the garbage from their old Big East days, they really deserve this success.

Temple's fans ( on this board) have proved to be classy & humble with their success. Congrats again to Temple & their fans !
