The Basketball Season
Well, 3-7 now, losers of 6 straight I believe. Are we where you thought we'd be at this point of the season? I thought we had a shot at Furman before the season started. Everything is playing out as I thought it might thus far. I pegged us at 7 wins.

RE: The Basketball Season
We are working through some kinks. The word is out on Evan Maxwell so we will need some better shooting fromt he outside to win. Thankfully we are just a week away from John dawson becoming eligible to play. That should help considerably in scoring department.

Forgot about Dawson. Hope he becomes a real positive factor.

RE: The Basketball Season
Truthfully, I think we're a little better than I expected. We have had many close games and with such a young team, they need to learn how to win. I didn't expect us to be that close with so many opponents even though our match ups aren't against the power programs. I think once we flip the switch and can pull out the close games, we'll actually be a solid team.

RE: The Basketball Season
I didn't realize LU was the youngest team in the nation. I saw that highlight on one of the TV broadcasts. 92% underclassmen. It should really be no surprise that we are where we are.

RE: The Basketball Season
Uh oh. Lamar was one of the games I counted on winning this season. I see two more wins for us... vs. Longwood and vs. Presbyterian. I'll throw in a surprise win for optimistic thinking to finish the season with 6 wins. Of course, that's based on our current line up. With the addition of a player or two that prediction might change.

Fri. Nov 13 vs. Covenant W 64-62 1-0 (0-0)
Sat. Nov 14 vs. Summit W 90-52 2-0 (0-0)
Tu. Nov 17 vs. William & Mary L 70-59 2-1 (0-0)
Sat. Nov 21 vs. Central Pennsylvania College W 86-50 3-1 (0-0)
Thu. Nov 26 vs. Appalachian State L 73-62 3-2 (0-0)
Fri. Nov 27 vs. Western Michigan L 68-58 3-3 (0-0)
Sun. Nov 29 vs. Tulane L 72-51 3-4 (0-0)
Thu. Dec 3 @ Radford L 56-52 3-5 (0-1)
Sat. Dec 5 vs. Charleston Southern L 68-61 3-6 (0-2)
Tue. Dec 8 @ Furman L 79-56 3-7 (0-2)
Sat. Dec 12 vs. Lamar L 73-58 3-8 (0-2)

RE: The Basketball Season
St. Francis is the likely only winnable non-conference game remaining. Granted, we only have four and the three others are very difficult, but we haven't beaten a Division I program yet that I can tell. Richie McKay, work your magic! I still maintain that the Big South isn't good and we could get hot and finish around .500% in-conference.

RE: The Basketball Season
Well, SF is (3-6) on the season. They have beat the teams they were supposed to and lost to the good teams on their schedule. The only questionable loss was to NJIT. I suppose there is an outside shot LU beats them. But it'll be tough since it's a road game.

I hope you are right about the BSC. It would help these kids out a lot if they can pick up a few wins. They are basically (0-8) on the season. Wins over DII, NAIA, DIII teams shouldn't even count.

A few wins would help these kids confidence and get us out of the loser mentality heading into next season. Go Flames!

I don't think we've ever beaten Longwood in Farmville either...

Really? We've got to fix that immediately. They have been awful for so long but we haven't won on their court? Ugh the depths of our ineptitude knows no limits.

RE: The Basketball Season
It is true. That place has been brutal to us since I was back in the school in the '80s and we were in the same D2 conference together.

If you guys have seen any of the action this season on TV, you would see a vastly improved defense and the mergence of a real post threat in Evan Maxwell. Unfortunately the rest of our offense has been practically non-existent. The arrival of John Dawson's eligibility will hopefully give our offense a shot int eh arm that it desperately needs.

While losing is never fun, I have rather enjoyed watching the team play this year. It is actually a surprisingly fun brand of basketball even with the Pack Line Defense.

RE: The Basketball Season
I too have been impressed with the team this season. The defense seems sound, or at least active. I was impressed with Evan Maxwell, although our big men lately haven't been anything to write home about so Maxwell doesn't have much competition to beat out. I'm excited to see how the team finishes, although if it isn't good then it will be a long offseason until next year. Regardless, the team is young and seems talented and that's more hope than we've had in a while.

If we play like we did against Princeton I could see us picking up a win against St. Whatever.

RE: The Basketball Season
I know it's not a perfect comparison, but here is a look at this year and last year. Coaching change and roster change is a huge difference.

2015 (3-9)
Points Per Game
64 - Liberty
67 - Opponent
If you only count Division I games... (0-9)
59 - Liberty
71 - Opponent

2014 (5-7)
Points Per Game
64 - Liberty
62 - Opponent
If you only count Division I games... (2-7)
58 - Liberty
64 - Opponent

Well we currently have the worst RPI in college basketball again at 351. Nothing new there.

RE: The Basketball Season
We were basically starying from scratch and we are now starting a walk-on at the 2 as evidence of fresh start. I have been pleasantly surprused at the competitiveness even after the frustrating 2nd half in Brooklyn.

The Basketball Season
Before the game: VCU today. I am expecting a 30-40 point loss.

After the Game: Still aweful, but better than I expected. 85-57 loss. I didn't think we'd get to 50 points and we did, so that's good. We kept playing hard in the second half, so that's good. We didn't have as many turnovers as I thought we'd have, so that's great.

Tuesday against Notre Dame is going to be a worse loss than what we had this afternoon. But playing games like this will pay dividends down the road.
