Which leads me to: why the heck isn't Liberty winning the conference every year? We can "buy" the best coaches, the best facilities, we have the best (or most) fan support. Why is it we have one playoff appearance? Granted, we didn't start to really flex our monetary muscles until the Rocco era (at least from my understanding, and I may/am probably wrong on this). Although I believe in "Any given Saturday," that should even out over the years to benefit Liberty, not hurt us every single year. I feel like the Chicago Cubs in that we've got one of the top budgets around but don't have the success despite it. Will we get to the top? I hope so and I think so. Is Gill the guy to get us there? I hope so but I'm not sure. We'll see and I think this year will make or break him.
When I lived in Boca Raton and watch the UofM vs. FSU games in the 80's and 90's, the Canes had the 'Noles number. Wide right was thr moniker as UofM beat FSU handily several years in a row, numerous times when "wide right" field goals missed for FSU. Then FSU finally broke through and beat Miami, and then beat Miami more often than losing, and then evolved where FSU became the better, higher profile team.

As Liberty has made the playoff one time and has one win in the playoffs, there's little history of big game victories. Arguably, the JMU/LU playoff win could be LU's biggest victory. Until LU consistently plays with, and beats the better FCS teams, LU will be saddled with the potential label vs. the proven label.

Victories over FBS App St and GaSo were nice. Victories for JMU at Blacksburg and App St at Michigan were huge. App parlayed their upset victory to FBS membership. When LU gets their name recognition on the road FBS win, it will also propel the program. And with the facilities in place, and a high profile FBS victory, the label will diminish from potential to proven.

2016 Football Schedule
So what you're saying is take care if Va. Tech this year and Baylor next year and the following year we'll be on pace to get our FBS invite. Sounds about right to me. Let's go for it.

Wellllll, not quite but signature victories do propel FCS programs to greater validity to play with the big boys vs. the weak Big South.

Out of ignorance mostly, but what signature victory does Coastal Carolina have and how did that get them into the Sun Belt? Ditto to Georgia State, South Alabama, Texas State, and Charlotte, UT San Antonio, and Old Dominion to CUSA?

Coastal = Public & nice vacation spot & to drive the point home anyone but Liberty
Ga. State = Public & Big city
S. Bama = Public & City on the coast
Texas St. = Hmm, not really sure other than public
Charlotte = Public & Big city
UTSA = Public & Big city
ODU = Public & Large population and nice vacation spot

I know why they were invited but specifically to NewTimes' point of FCS schools needing signature wins over FBS schools to prove they can hang with the big boys yet this collection largely has done squat, if anything to resemble a big win.

The first signature FCS victories over FBS teams that come to mind are the App St/Michigan, GaSo/Florida games. True Coastal does not a marquee FBS game victory like the others. And the Coastal to SBC vote seems to be a future choice as CCU has much catching up to App St and GaSo as their current fan base is less than 1/3 of what either school was when they entered FBS.

If JMU had been wise and accepted the supposedly SBC invite one could count their Va Tech victory. JMU wasn't wise and they're still on the outside looking in as is LU.

RE: 2016 Football Schedule
Sep 3 @ Virginia Tech
Sep 10 vs. Jacksonville
Sep 17 @ SMU
Sep 24 vs. Jacksonville State
Oct 1 vs. Robert Morris
Oct 15 @ Kennesaw State*
Oct 22 vs. Monmouth*
Oct 29, vs. Gardner-Webb*
Nov 5 @ Presbyterian*
Nov 12 vs. Charleston Southern*
Nov 17 @ Coastal Carolina

The more I look at this, the less confident I am. I was hoping for 7 wins, but realistically thought 6. Now, I'm getting a little nervous and am wondering if it is going to be a rough year?

RE: 2016 Football Schedule
It is a tough non-conference schedule. I will automatically give an FBS team the benefit of the doubt and expect them to beat us so that is three (ish) losses right off the bat, naturally all on the road. Jacksonville State won't be easy but they are at home. Same goes for Charleston Southern. I will predict 7 wins and a playoff birth. Anything less would be a disappointment in my book.
