$412,930 on a “scientific” paper on the “relationship between gender and glaciers.”
And people wonder why the American voter is p#ssed off.....

Quote:Congratulations, taxpayers of America: You’ve just spent $412,930 on a “scientific” paper on the “relationship between gender and glaciers.”

That’s what the National Science Foundation dropped on “Glaciers, gender and science,” 10,000-plus words of gobbledygook from University of Oregon prof Mark Carey.

Sure, that’s roughly 40 bucks a word — but many of them are big words.

The study urges scientists to take a “feminist political ecology and feminist postcolonial” approach when studying melting ice caps and climate change. Hey, it’s not really global doom unless it comes with full-bore cutting-edge social-justice buzzwords.

Another taste: “The feminist glaciology framework generates robust analysis of gender, power and epistemologies in dynamic social-ecological systems, thereby leading to more just and equitable science and human-ice interactions.”

More just science — and human-ice interactions. Wow.

Isn't this same paper we had a quick discussion on Yesterday that we all thought was one of those hoax papers?

My head hurts reading that. That said, it is not for me to criticize how a university spends its money on research, especially when such unusual research projects can get their university recognition and earn it more money. Especially
when you consider some of the frivolous items some of the larger athletic departments spend. Note I know that is their money they earned in most cases, but most also take in revenue from student fees, so until they pay that back and stop taking subsidies from the school, I find criticizing how they spend money to be fair.

Note as from my numerous posts, I am a big sports fan. Just pointing it out.

It's a dumb paper but that money is an NSF career grant, so it's not $40 per word, it's to fund him and his group for (generally) five years. That doesn't even pay for the professor's summer money ($30k pa), a student ($20k pa) and a postdoc ($40k pa plus benefits) and should result in at least three papers per year. I hope some of them are actually science (glacier-gender relations is not science imo), since this is NSF money.

Oregon...

I think that just about sums it up.

The higher education system has devolved to the point where it is simply producing useless nonsense for the sake of producing useless nonsense.

Mark Carey should be fired and have to return his "grant" money immediately, but I bet he will get a promotion and is probably on track to open up a new "Center for the Study of Gender Queer Geographic Formations."

the line of demarcation and law of diminishing returns is upon the globe......

it's nothing more than line 1.......

the only difference between now and yesterday is twatchat....

you gotta build things or resurface the foundation....

people are simply lazy pieces of eight, seven, six, five.....
