I just learned Hughes chose Rice over A&M, Oregon, Indiana and Arizona. Clearly attracted a lot of interest.

I understand we also just recently picked up Mitchell Holcomb, Penn's Saturday starting pitcher the past 3 years (and a midweek starter his Freshman year), as a grad transfer. He's from Georgetown, TX. Here's his bio heading into this year...

I sometimes wonder where Rice athletics would be today had T. Boone Pickens gone to Rice instead of Okie State.

I wonder where we would be if I had become a multi-billionaire.

Even before the recent transfer commits, the 2020 incoming class was shaping up as our best since the 2015 incoming class (Salinas, Gray, Chandler, Otto, Myers, Dunlap, Pettite, and Brewer). That class had 4 Top 200 ranked prospects (Salinas, Gray, Chandler, Amador, Frazier, Brewer), while Myers, Otto and Dunlap were all breakout stars for us.

FTR, Howard Hughes did attend Rice briefly. But he left shortly after he was orphaned when his millionaire father died in January 1924. (His mother had died less than two years earlier.)

In December 1924, Hughes was successful in having himself (not yet 19 years old at the time) declared an adult so he could take control of his father's industry-leading oilfield tool company. He then married his Sunday School sweetheart (Ella Botts Rice, the great-niece of William March Rice) and took off for Hollywood, where he started making movies.

Hughes learned to play golf at age nine, and was a good golfer as a young adult. But mostly, he loved flying.

I did not find any mentions of him in the Thresher when he was a student at Rice. (But I haven't checked every issue.)

After Hughes died, one of the several wills that sprung up and were described in news stories would have apparently given Rice something like 1/32nd of Hughes' estate. President Hackerman gave an interesting rundown of the situation in his Nov. 14, 1977 State of the University Speech, which was recorded by KTRU. (Listen to is at 41:35-46:08 here: https://scholarship.rice.edu/handle/1911/96768: "I'm not getting excited about it" but he said Rice had retained lawyers to "protect our interests if there are any interests to protect.")

Just think what a fabulous career he could have had if he hadn't been a college drop out.

Another Andy Petite’s son. It looks like he has been battling injuries his whole collegiate career as a pitcher.

I’m rather partial to cosecants, myself. But I do enjoy a nice tangent now and then as well.

But only secant and tangent are in the Rice athletic cheer. Keep it Rice sports centric.

Nothing better than a sine sign at a Rice game.
