Interesting on 92.9 they're noting that every place gets worse when he leaves, bc he doesnt recruit top tier, plug and play talent, and successors arent the quality of x/o coach he is to get avg talent to outperform.
Something to be aware of in the future, the next guy will have to hit the ground running and be a recruiter. Hopefully he shows recruiting ability either himself or in his staff selections. More than likely we will forget this tidbit unless a media or radio guy mentions it, then hammer them for their anti Memphis agenda.
We may at some point think our talent is better than it is, when it's really the coaching. Or my preference is that we hopefully have both, talent and coaching.
I was mulling this fact over last night...so true.

For the first time in five years I am looking at recruiting rankings with excitement. Didn't matter how good our players were the last five years. But now this is exciting again.

I've seen Tubby's teams at Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minn & Texas Tech. Boring is not what I saw. Please define "boring".

Maybe he thinks that playing with your brain on both ends of the court is boring. Dunno.

How?
Tubby has been playing up tempo basketball for a quarter century now.
Did you expect him to finally slow it down here?

Slow, deliberate offense. I'm glad we'll finally be able to see our team run a real offense with some real plays, but it's gonna be a huge change of pace for us. Crunching numbers real quick, for his career he averages 207th in D1 for possessions per game. He was a lot slower if you look at his last two stops. At Minnesota he averaged 250th, and Texas Tech he averaged 289th. During the same time period, Memphis as a program averaged 87th in D1. Calipari averaged 107th, with paces of 19th, 66th, and 83rd during his three year run from 06 to 08. Pastner averaged 87th with some years as high as 18th, 38th, 43rd. I know that's a whole bunch of numbers to throw out, but all it tells me is Tubby plays slow, especially since he left Kentucky. Hopefully that is a direct correlation between the talent levels he was able to get at Kentucky vs his other stops. So I hope he will be able to get some talented athletes here and play faster than he has been lately. Obviously if we make Finals Fours playing the slowest pace in the country I won't give an ish, but I personally find faster paced basketball more exciting.

I just finished watching the press conference. When he was asked about staff - he made mention that his phone has been blowing up. Sounds like people want to be here and work under him. That is good to hear.

With all due respect my friend, Tubby has been playing an uptemp style rooted in pressure defense for 25 years. He has been coaching in the B10 the last several years, and that slows down EVERYONE. Particularity when you are overclassed talent wise at a smaller program.
Tubby himself is not Mr personality, and people confuse that with his teams playing style.
Tubbys teams play in your face defense that create pressure and turnovers into fast break opportunities.

I do agree with this. I just want to see a well-organized, fundamentally sound, disciplined team for a change.

Caulkins once again making great points:
"Indeed, the only real question about Smith is whether he has the energy to start at a new program, whether he is — let's be blunt about it — too old.
But if 64 is too old, why is Jim Boeheim still going to Final Fours at 71? Why is Roy Williams still making it to the national title game at 65? Why is Mike Krzyzewski still coaching Duke and the U.S. Olympic team at 69? Why is Larry Brown still turning around programs at 75?"
