Time to expand Williams Stadium
Getting back to stadium expansion..... what kind of amenities are you looking for or would desire?

The first step is clearly the upper deck on the student side, but when the horseshoe is completed, I'd love to see the upper portion above the visitor locker room be a patio-style party deck, whether uncovered or canopied. It would include picnic tables, refreshments, and other things that could really add to the vibe of the Bill to be the place to be. I know there are some college stadiums that take advantage of this.

Additionally, another gift shop by that side to off-set the chaos that is the bookstore on gameday.

I'm sure there's more but I can't think of it now

I like the party deck idea, to a degree. At UofL games many people leave their seats for the game and spend their time on the party deck. I don't like that. If the party deck were sold as a separate ticket, I'd be in favor of it. Otherwise there are ugly barren gaps in seating. Can the party deck have fire pits like the baseball stadium?

I agree with the "no party deck" idea. It is clever but I don't have any faith in our fans to pay attention to the game and provide a home field advantage. I do like the spirit of the party deck and if there was an after party place to go celebrate a win or pick yourself up after a loss then that would have potential.

I like the idea of a picnic area/patio/patio-deck. LU did a great job with the baseball stadium so just expand that idea and include it in the Bill expansion.

About fans not paying attention to the game, in the past when I've go to FB games, I often walk around the whole stadium (home side 1st half, visitor/student section 2nd half). Home side, fans are into the game, watching all the plays and cheering when warranted. Student side, a very large percentage, don't even watch the game and socialize, many with their backs towards the field. The important thing is that they are at the game and supporting the FB program. If they choose to socialize with friends and text/Facebook/Twit friends, then so be it. At least they are in attendance and cheer and watch occasionally. That's why I support the patio area as it would be unique for the FB stadium,

- I want a top rate team store in the stadium. I want to be able to get all the LU gear I could ever imagine or want there.

- Are there any Liberty Flame themed sports bar/restaurants in Lynchburg?

- For the games I have been to, fans were always allowed onto the field following the game. Will this still be allowed or does FBS prohibit that? I hope fans can still do it. It was great for kids and fun to mingle with players.

Hopefully not being a conference champion does not hurt our chances of the playoffs or a bowl game!!!!
[/quote]

Actually not being in a conference means 6-6 will not get you in a bowl game. In most years C-USA will put all eligible teams in a bowl game. Sun belt in last several years has done so. What happens is a number of bowl games will have unfilled slots that go to at large when their conferences cant fill them.

An at-large bid would require a higher bar for Liberty. 7-5? 8-4? depends on the year.

6-6 will get them into a bowl pretty much every year. The bowls hardly ever have enough bowl eligible teams. The Playoff is pretty much impossible unless you guys go undefeated and have a couple of really tough P5 wins (Auburn is a start). As far as the guy asking about being allowed on the field the NCAA doesn't prohibit it Clemson does it after home game (meet on the paw).

Wasn't it already announced and now we're waiting on designer and start of construction?

Where are the photos and video from when the stadium was redone a few years back. That had an expanded stadium version.

Waiting until attendance demands it is valid but not the point. That's the traditional way. Wait until the need is there then do it. In LU's case, the thread's intent is to place emphasis back on LU's sports and facilities rather than on political/social/moral issues that influence the perception.

LU will simply be more appealing as a FBS program as it more resembles one with facilities and FB and basketball attendance. Emphasis should be to expand the stadium with a strong emphasis on filling the stadium to capacity with the new capacity at or near 25,000.

What does LU do if it doesn't be proactive and continue to improve it's position by means it can control as stated, attendance and facilities? Can LU afford to sit back and wait until the offer comes? Even JMU with it's fumbling and bumbling is a stronger candidate than LU at present. Coastal's invite is the writing on the wall where LU lands within the SBC.

Or does LU seek indy and/or sue the NCAA which has been mentioned many times here and on other threads? The best and most wise action, that LU controls is to continue to develop the facilities and increase attendance. And tone down the rhetoric.

If JMU is a strong candidate for a 1A conference or not is moot. JMU won't leave the CAA until JMU fans can get rid of the current president and AD.

PH, as a LU fan, I feel your anguish. I hope you guys vanish the weak admins and bring in some forward thinking, risk-taking leaders in time.

Observations, first, if the previous expansions were done with the intent to wait until FBS was achieved, the expansion plan could be sound. If not, that opens up a whole other direction. I'm guessing LU is looking to go to 35,000 or more. It just makes sense as a marketing tool as that exhibits to recruits a tangible amenity that does make an impression.

I'm also purely speculating that the LFSN is going to be a big time amenity for the school, even beyond it's present scope. And lastly, an expansion of GameOn. These amenities serve as marketing tools, athletic branding, recruiting tools and high visibility for the school.

Tidbit on Williams Stadium expansion in the News & Advance, June 14

"...Todd Patulski, who was hired on April 7 as the athletic department’s chief financial officer, is now handling all financial aspects of the athletic department (which Guridy previously had a hand in overseeing). He is expected to coordinate with McCaw on the expansion of Williams Stadium prior to the 2018 season."

And changes in the athletic department at:

35,000 sounds good to me. Building for the future. We can come close to selling out a couple games if we can keep scheduling ODU, UVa, VT and a few national and regional big names. If we want to be a national player we need to look like one.

35,000 sounds good to me too. It basically puts us near the top end of the G5, or more specifically, above most except the AAC. We just need to fill it.

When Jeff Barber was an AD, VMDO designed Williams Stadium include phase2 and phase3. It seems they are pursuing 'Jeffersonian Style' stadium.

I heard Ian McCaw fully participated in Baylor's McLane Stadium. Architect 'Populous' designed the stadium.

Those two architecture companies have no similarities of their designs.

I guess McCaw prefers Populous design instead of VMDO's, so that's why it takes longer to get the decision.

Here is POPULOUS work of Mclane Stadium. beautiful.

Mclane Stadium PoPulous

So pretty, but it's not a Jeffersonian Style.

With the rest of the campus going Jeffersonian, I imagine the football stadium will as well despite McCaw's influence.
