I know this is a W&M board, but that is an achievement that is remarkable on so many levels, and should be celebrated, and shouted about, by all of the non-power schools in the land.

So, on this Fourth of July weekend, hats off, and glasses raised, to a true American underdog success story.

Congrats to the Chanticleers, their coaches, players, fans, and alumni!

Borrowing a phrase, this is one that will last a lifetime!

On my way home from a week in Illinois, I bought a beer at a bar at O'Hare waiting for my flight home. The game was on and I saw the last out. A guy in the bar with a Coastal baseball cap on starts going ballistic.

Unfortunately for him, he had a few too many to drink and attracted a lot of attention from security. He wound up sitting a row in front of me on the plane to Charlotte. He came really close to getting in trouble, kept asking people around him if they were air marshals and were they alerted by TSA to keep an eye on him.

The stewardess gave me a free beer since she considered the guy to be difficult and wanted us to enjoy our flight.

I hope that I will celebrate the Tribe's first National Championship without getting myself in trouble.

I always love it when one of the "little guys" brings it home. I will say, though, that CCU was flat out better than most of the teams they played and have had a really good program for a while. This isn't exactly a flash in the pan for them. Still fun to enjoy, though!

Actually, W&M already has TWO NCAA National Team Championships, probably not known by many of our younger adherents.

William & Mary won back to back NCAA National Tennis Championships in 1947 and 1948...the trophies may still be seen in W&M Hall. That was some team: Gardner Larned, Bernard Bartzen, and Fred Covaleskie,
all great players who went on to win national tennis championships and represent the US on Davis Cup teams.

There were also two brothers (whose names escape me) from Canada on that team who both played for Canada on their Davis Cup team.

At one point the team won 86 dual matches in a row, then the NCAA record for any sport.

Coach Gary Glimore, who played at Coastal Carolina in 1979 and '80, won his first national championship in his 21st season at Coastal.

He's our Laycock
