RE: Reflecting as Nebraska and B1G celebrate five years together
I think Nebraska made the right call long term. It does seem rather fantastic in retrospect that certain schools were trying to lock up Nebraska meanwhile trying to plot their own escape. In the final analysis I do think they were right on one account... The league was mortally wounded when Nebraska left. Technically Colorado left first but in a very short time to lose Nebraska, Colorado, Mizzou, & Texas A&M and the replacements were TCU & WVU... on net the losses were colossal. A small private college in Fort Worth and a solid state school over 1000 miles away didn't make up for the losses. IMO the league did die when Nebraska et al left. The Big XII has no viable alternatives to backfill what was lost and Texas's power only grew relative to what it was previously, which was substantial!
I know Nebraska fans miss the proximate battles of the old Big 8 and the recruiting in Texas but truth be told you can schedule old Big 8 schools OOC and expand the recruiting budget to hit Texas harder. What you couldn't do was be left without a viable conference and the money and exposure that will flow from a Power Conference. If the Pac 10 did grab 6 Nebraska could have been left out in the cold like UCONN is right now.

Nebraska has to continue to pull in top quality OO State talent as there is not nearly enough instate. Will be hard for them to get talent from Ohio, PA, MI, WI to come west. Can pull some in from IL but the state of Illinois is inundated with recruiters from around the nation and only so much talent.

Huskers need to take advantage of the HC change at Missou and the fact that Bill Snyder can;t last much longer at Kansas State and the fact that Colorado is down. Winning a west coast bowl game last year is also an event they need to capitalize on.

Their 2017 class is small but high quality talent

Name Pos Location Ht Wt Signed Stars Rating Committed
Tristan Gebbia QB Calabasas, CA 6'3" 180 5.9 4/5/16
Avery Roberts LB Wilmington, DE 6'1" 213 5.9 4/21/16
Jaevon McQuitty WR Columbia, MO 6'2" 190 5.8 3/12/16
Keyshawn Johnson Jr. WR Calabasas, CA 6'1" 195 5.8 3/23/16
Brenden Jaimes OL Austin, TX 6'6" 260 5.7 4/16/16
Willie Hampton LB West Palm Beach, FL 6'2" 220 5.6 3/10/16
Austin Allen TE Aurora, NE 6'8" 230 5.6 4/15/16
Deontre Thomas DT Mustang, OK 6'2" 260 5.6 4/30/16
Matt Sichterman OL King Mills, OH 6'5" 266 5.6 5/15/16
Broc Bando OL Bradenton, FL 6'4" 279 5.5 6/17/16
Robert Porcher DE Orlando, FL 6'3" 250 5.4

If Keyshawn Johnson's son is anything like his dad then Nebraska has corralled quite a talent. Interesting they got him away from the west coast and USC
