Yep, seems like we've played West Virginia more than Marshall over the years. We had an epic come from behind win at the Convo in 1988 against WVU.

Well ECU is a good example of why G5’s would be reluctant to play us in football. Seems like it’d make sense to play them more often in basketball though.

JMUs game at Georgia Tech will be Monday November 16th.

Also announced a game at Florida on 12/22. We played there a few years ago. That’s 3 Power 5 games so far- Uva at home, road at Georgia Tech, road at Florida. This is more like the schedule that many fans have been clamoring for!

Love it. Hopefully, we will start getting into some of these ESPN 2- or 3-day early season tournament events in the next few years as the program (hopefully) rises from the dead.

Been a while since we played than many Power teams in the OOC. Typically under Brady we would play one (Kansas State, Ohio State, Virginia, West Virginia, and UCLA come to mind). Under Rowe there were a couple of years where we didn’t play any and we played at Florida and at UVA.

3 should be the standard coupled with some local peer mid majors. Agreed on the early season neutral site tournaments that have P5 schools in them. Most of ours recently have been limited to mid majors only. It’s a simple numbers game IMO- the more cracks at the power conference teams that you get the bigger chance for upsets which creates real momentum for the program. Virtually every other JMU team has used that as the template to spring board their program to a nationally competitive program.

Recently when speaking about the team Byington made mention of Jacobs and how some of his best games last year were against better competition- ODU Uva Mason. I remember Wooden had a good game at Mason. Looking at the box scores some of Vado Morses best games were against power teams. These kids by in large like to play against better teams and maybe we come up short but it helps them rise to the occasion. All the more reason to try to play the best- really no down side IMO.

While scheduling is and always has been ultimately in the hands of the AD's office, the head coaches of the programs certainly have significant inputs. Some folks foolishly think the head basketball coach goes out and schedules on his own. It doesn't work that way.

Having said that, I'm interested to see if Bourne continues scheduling games against D3 teams and any inputs HCMB might have into that. A lot of programs are now doing it. Almost all of the CAA. Some scheduling 2 games. I understand it, but don't like it. Up the schedule is a good thing. The CAA is a 1-bid league and likely will be for the foreseeable future. Losing in the OOC isn't a big deal to me. The real season begins when the CAA schedule starts. Play tough competition prior to late December and get yourself ready for the CAA. Yes, play some regional old-time foes such as Mason, ODU, and hopefully get VCU and Bitchmond back on the schedules. Shenandoah? Bridgewater? No thanks. Insulting to season ticket holders, TBH.

I think basketball works differently and my understanding is that the coaching staff does the schedule. In years past the head coach charged and assistant with scheduling - Byron Taylor for example.

No way. The coaching staff does not do the scheduling. They have significant inputs as I said, but there are higher approvals to any proposed plans. Scheduling ultimately sits with the AD's office. I know for a fact that Kevin White does football scheduling because I have spoken directly with him. Like 97 I feel like I have been told basketball is different. The ADs office is likely involved but I feel like the coaching staff has more say than in football. I will check a source and see what he says but you and 97 both might be right here.

I believe the coaches line it up and then of course the AD’s office has to sign the contracts and make things official. I also believe there are probably pre approvals from Ad to coach in terms of road games vs home costs for playing in tournaments etc but I do believe men’s basketball
Is different and the coaches are the ones who drive scheduling philosophy and scheduling opponents. Otherwise why would you hear Kevin Warner talk about Men’s football opponents and never talk about basketball opponents that have been scheduled?

When JMU landed that home and home a few years back with UVA I recall that the news article credited Rob O’Driscoll (Brady’s designated assistant who was in charge the schedule the way Rowe tasked Taylor with that) with that agreement. It started with a Uva assistant them needing a game and connecting with O’Driscoll.

Yes, they probably had initial "you wanna play a series" discussions. Good for them. Happens all the time. Ultimately it goes to the AD's office to negotiate the contract and determine the financial agreements. College assistant basketball coaches are not skilled in those areas...on either side. UVa's assistant coach isn't cutting ultimate deals for schedules. He can suggest and raise the opportunity, but he doesn't negotiate the final contract. Never has/have. Never will.

I don’t think any of us believe the coaches execute the contracts.

Because of how recruiting occurs in basketball with summer AAU tournaments etc. college basketball coaches have more contact with each other than football coaches do. There are relationships built between the coaches while on the recruiting trail. These lead to coaches scheduling games with each other. The ADs office takes care of the contracts.

I have heard stories of assistants contacting other schools in the off-season to arrange games too.
