How would you rank 2016 CUSA QB's?
There are a lot of new faces at QB so ranking them is pretty hard. I think there will be the normal three tiers, "Elite", "Solid starter" and "Could be replaced mid year." How would you guys project them to stack up this year?

Tier 1-"Elite"
1. Nick Mullens-USM
2. Brent Stockstill-MT
3. Chase Litton-MU

Tier 2-"Solid starter"
4. Alex McGough-FIU
5. Mike White-WKU
6. Kevin Olsen-CHA
7. Zack Greenlee-UTEP
8. Ryan Higgins-LT

Tier 3-"Could be replaced mid year"
9. David Washington-ODU
10. Jared Johnson-UTSA
11. Tyler Stehling-RICE
12. Alec Morris-UNT
13. Jason Driskel-FAU

Like I said, this is tough because there are so many unknowns. What do you guys think?

You need to split tier 2 into proven starters who arent elite like McGough, and the cast of likely but unproven guys like White & Olsen, IMHO.

Top three are right. I'm not sure beyond that. If Washington is healthy I feel pretty comfortable with him leading our offense. I think I'd put him in the middle tier based on your descriptions.

Not quite sure you could say Olsen is a solid starter without any game evidence.

It's not clear how the QB situation at UTSA might turn out. Sturm might be the guy at the start or at some point during the season. He's got some talent.

The biggest problem with UTSA in recent years is the offensive line. That has been the weakest part of the team. We can't expect much out of the QBs until that improves (no matter who is back there).

Hard to rank a unknown and at this point that's what Western's QB and a few others are

I would have a top 2 and move Chase Litton with Alex McGough then a another tier. At this point Litton has not shown any more than Mcgough. That might change but till it does neither belong with 1. Nick Mullens & 2. Brent Stockstill

Agree. I am optimistic about him, but we have no reports really.

Lambert said on the radio on Friday that he likes him and he's been a good teammate, but didn't say anything about how he has actually performed in practice, unless I missed that part of his interview.

Any fans from longer standing CUSA programs care to weigh in on some of the best years for a top 2-3 QBs group in the league?

I guess two years ago with Heineke and Cato as seniors and Doughty in his ninth(tenth?) season would certainly be on the list.

Like I said in my first post this is how I PROJECT the QBs to rank at the end of the season. Olsen is very talented, nearly beat out Brad Kaaya at Miami. They went with Kaaya because he was ready as a true freshman and had a higher ceiling. Olsen also had off the field problems. Phil Steele has Olsen ranked 5th so it's not too crazy.

Barring injury I don't see David Washington being replaced. He belongs in tier two.

I think Litton can make the jump this year to be in the top 3. McGough was hard to rank, he could very well play his way into the top 3. The ODU situation is tough too, Bentley is the QB of the future and if Washington doesn't start out well Bentley has probably developed enough to take over.

Right, I just can't project a whole season for a guy we've only seen in a spring game. I really hope your right.

I guess I'm pretty pessimistic, I blame Martin Iti.

RE: How would you rank 2016 CUSA QB's?
If you go strictly off what they have done, not what fans think they can do, it looks like this:

1. Stockstill - I know this will throw some, but he had the highest completion percentage, best TD to Int ratio and lowest sack rate in the conference out of all returning QBs. He did all that as a first year starter who should improve this year. His QB rating was only slightly lower than Mullens.

2. Mullens - has the advantage of being a senior, had the best QB rating in the league, but is a little more turnover prone than Stockstill (both Ints and fumbles), holds the ball longer and gets sacked at a rate that is 30% higher than Stockstill (reason for some of those fumbles). Those are mistakes that a three year starter shouldn't make, implying Stock has a higher ceiling this year.

3. Litton - 3rd highest QB rating in the conference of returning QBs. A big step down from the top 2, they should be in their own category. He get's the 3rd spot because he was also 3rd in TD-Int ratio and second in lowest sack rate. Last year was a true freshman who should see things slow down for him this year.

4. McGough - Almost interchangeable with Litton at the 3 spot. Better completion percentage, but a lower rating. Takes way to many sacks, 50% more likely to take a negative play (sack) than Litton. Also, his attempts per TD are not up to par with the 3 above him.

Everyone else is a crapshoot, either untested or limited action, or some action but not at his level. White, in his one year of real action at USF completed only 50% of his passes and had an 1.1 TD to Int ratio (the 4 listed QBs above were 2.6 to 3.3). He also had a 6.6% sack rate (the top 3 above are between 3.5 and 4.6). Greenlee and Higgins have some history, but the two of those, like White, have an under 115 QB rating (the four above are all over 130 with the top two over 150).

This looks pretty good to me. If Washington stays healthy, I might move him up a spot. He did kick start the Monarchs a bit in the middle of the season, as I recall.

I'd take Stock over any QB in the conference, but I'd be happy with any of the top 3 guys.

I think Nick Mullens is the best, but not by much. The top two are good, and the third isn't bad at all.

I think Mullens played in a better system last year. I would hate to see what Brohm could do with Stockstill.

You'll have time to grow to hate what Tony Franklin does with him.

Very well written. Agreed on pretty much everything. Can't wait to see how the top QBs perform this year. Stock Jr should be great.
