Here is the complete statement from league commissioner Josh Fenton:

“After careful consideration and a thorough vetting process, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s Board of Directors announced the Conference will not move forward with membership expansion at this time. We will continue to be attentive to the college hockey landscape and any future changes that may come. However, our focus right now is guided by what we can do to strengthen our current membership into the future.”

Jerks at St Cloud and Duluth killed the whole thing, just to keep Mankato out.

The ASU arena situation needs to be resolved as some teams have a bigger practice arena than ASU has for games. Also, UNLV or San Diego St or another PAC12 school could announce this spring IN which case Mankato is probably out.

So where does Arizona State go from here?

The Big 10 hockey conference turned them down...

The NCHC just denied them membership...

That leaves only 2 options remaining for their fledgling Division One program:

1) continued independence

2) join the WCHA

Joining the WCHA is by far the most viable and most desirable option. ASU doesn't even have to pursue the WCHA -- the WCHA has been pursing them! Back in April 2016, the WCHA Commissioner Bill Robertson said: "The WCHA is still in active pursuit of Arizona State University and had productive meetings with them in Tampa at the Frozen Four, I'm hopeful and I understand this is a process."

Arizona State hockey has an open invitation to the WCHA. Coincidentally, the WCHA is the ONLY invite that ASU has to any division one hockey conference...

ASU hockey needs a home.

WCHA is offering them a home.

They don't have any other options.

They need a conference to grow their program.

"Beggars can't be choosers"

ASU to the WCHA -- make it happen

Bet they'd have gotten in if Hayden Fox was their AD. Just sayin'.

Maybe Ariz St will take a two year deal with the WCHA, but the WCHA would have a problem with Ariz St's lack of a rink too.

But with both Alaska schools maybe dropping hockey, if both drop suddenly the WCHA probably would not be interested in non-Midwest schools. If one Alaska school keeps hockey, the WCHA will want to get back to an even number. Simon Fraser may actually be preferred, as it wouldn't be a short timer and it is in a major recruiting area.

RE: NCHC to Arizona State and Minnesota State: Not now, fellas.
I'm a little surprised the NCHC said no to both of them. Neither really fit what they wanted from their members, ASU less than MSU-M, but I figured they'd at least pull the trigger in one direction or another.

I think it's probably for the best in ASU's case. They need to prove they're committed to the sport long term and make a little noise on the ice to fit what the NCHC wants in a program. MSU-M probably just lost out because there are already two programs in Minnesota. If a school with their resume was in Michigan they'd get an invite.

How do you figure Michigan is an advantage, geographically?

If Grand Valley St, Wayne St or Oakland had hockey, they would be seriously considered just because they are in metro regions. Ferris St and all the UP teams wouldn't get a invite. Toledo, Akron and Cleveland St would probably get consideration too.

Now I'm kind of hoping a west coast league forms.

Not unless those above schools already had top D1 programs. A Michigan team transitioning to D1 wouldn't get North Dakota's vote.

Also, if one of the UP teams had a quality team when the NCHC formed, the UP team would've gotten the invite over WMU. I don't think FSU got the bid at the time because they wanted 8 teams, and it was either FSU or WMU, and for various reasons, WMU was chosen. (bigger city, more success against, bigger school)

Bowling Green is in metropolitan Toledo, for what it's worth.

A Grand Rapids or Detroit metro school with a reasonable arena would get CBS's vote. If a school has a nice arena, that goes a long way towards acceptance. Ariz St does not have a nice arena yet, which is its holdup. Still waiting for WMU's.

I was referring to MSU-M, not ASU. Michigan would be an advantage just because it has less teams than Minnesota, and it'd put the two MAC members of the NCHC on less of an island.

Well, the state of Michigan has more DI hockey programs than the state of Minnesota, total.

But guessing you were saying that the NCHC has two Minnesota teams as opposed to only one Michigan team. Nonetheless, I don't see the NCHC jumping at Ferris St.

Tweets were flying today about how Ariz St approached Hockey East to fill Notre Dame's slot.

Hockey East turned them down so Holy Cross and Bentley still have hope.

No doubt the NCHC will take them when a rink is built as their recruiting has been fine.

Should try Atlantic Hockey Association for temporary fix and access to an autobid.

NCHC should just take Arizona St since Notre Dame jumped to the Big 10.

Not sure what WMU not having a new arena has anything to do with it. Could the NCHC kick us out for not having a new one?

I didn't realize the Arizona State/Coyotes plan to build a new facility and bring the Coyotes to Tempe had fell through (looking at articles it is now old news, but I missed it).

Will be interesting to see what they do, but Oceanside where they play now is unacceptable at only 800 capacity.
