RE: SEC Games Week 1. (Plus Some Notables)
The league did play more stiff competition this week compared to the other leagues so there were bound to be some losses unfortunately.

I wasn't really that shocked at LSU losing. I didn't really buy the hype that Les was going to overhaul the system. They barely beat them a couple of years ago in Houston. This game was in Wisconsin after all even though technically it was a "neutral site" game.

The humiliating ones to me are Miss. State and Kentucky losing. There's absolutely no excuse for getting beat by South Alabama at home, nothing more I can say about that. Southern Miss is probably a decent team as far as G5 schools go, but Kentucky has been recruiting fairly well for a few years now which means a decent coaching job should have had that game in hand. Stoops may be on his way out.

Tennessee's problems have been covered.

Auburn took Clemson to the wire so I don't see that as embarrassing.

Georgia and Texas A&M both played very well against teams that the pundits were hyping before the season began, but for some reason those same pundits don't seem to talk about these 2 wins very much.

Missouri obviously has some work to do. I didn't see the game so I don't have any comments other than Odom is a first year coach and Morgantown is a tough place to play so it's not that big of a deal overall.

It's probably a good thing that South Carolina and Vandy played each other to start the season because I think both might have lost to decent opponents.

Florida seemed to struggle with UMass, but I wouldn't worry about that too much. That sort of thing happens and what's important is that they won the game convincingly.

Arkansas...I don't know what to say. I keep saying Bret Bielema was a great hire and I haven't changed my mind, but there's no good reason to struggle with La. Tech. They have typically started off a little rough under Bielema and came on strong as the season progressed. They can't keep doing that if they want to compete though.

Ole Miss...you were up 28-6 late in the first half. Apparently, FSU made better adjustments than you did. Perhaps a little complacency snuck in as well. I know that was a tough game in a hostile environment, but you've got to close that one out.

Bama...I thought USC was going to be a competitive game and it was for the majority of the first half. I was starting to get worried about our QB situation there for a little bit, but Jalen Hurts warmed up and I don't think he's ever looking back. A true freshman has never started at QB in Alabama history, but I think that's going to change next week. He's still got some holes in his game, but he's way ahead of the curve right now. The defense looked excellent and that's always the most important thing. All of a sudden I feel very good about this season.

With that said, I'm not sure we're quite as good as the other night's score would indicate. I think USC quit. We obviously shouldn't count on many other teams doing that.

I have to agree with JR too that we've got a dearth of quality coaching right now.

I'm not exactly sure why that's happened, but I would offer a theory...

In recent years, we've gone from hiring grizzled old coaches as our ADs to more business centered CEO types. Institutions are using search firms and data to make decisions rather than first hand knowledge. Is it possible that most of these guys just don't know what to look for in a coach? Or is it simply that good coaching has gone by the wayside?
