RE: Beer Beer Goggles
The buried plastic cup of beer really does work. I had an infestation at my old house (hmmm....I had strawberries there as well) and I put about 5 cups in and in a week it was slug armageddon.

Bury it so that the lip sits a little above ground to keep the beetles out (they eat slugs = good). I put little plastic pots the plants came in over the cups and cut little "doors" in them on the ground level so that it keeps water out of the cups of beer. but gives the slimey suckers a portal to the River Styx. They crawl in and die a glorious death in Bud Lite....best use for that stuff I have found.

have you tried any native strawberries? not sure if it would make any difference

I have tried the beer route with mild success. The problem is that they are all in planters because strawberries are the bamboo of the fruit world. They takeover without a lot of supervision. Since thy are all in planters there's not a ton of room. But I think I'll bury some small dixie cups and try again.

Bloomin' Center in Kenwood and Bzak in Milford have some interesting stuff. I went with the swamp milkweed in a few colors. Last September I nuked a 60x15 swath of grass (I hate fescue) along the driveway just for the butterflutters and their ruby throated bird pals.

Back to beer...we did Mother's Day at Washington Park for the dog park and Asian food fest (low hanging joke in there somewhere) Tsingtao is better than Ichibon by a long stretch.

My only contribution to this thread is that I got asked to leave a nice Chinese restaurant in St. Bernard many moons ago over Tsingtao beer. It was weird since I was ordering take-out.

The Tsingtao gods and I have made up...many times. Yes, much better than Ichibon.

I like growing odd things. This year I ordered peanuts off amazon those are going well. I've also been working on an avocado tree. Ive never seen something grow so slowly. This year I'm also trying a pineapple plant. I doubt that'll have enough time grow anything substanstial but I think it's cool.

Curious how your avocado tree works out. My wife and I love fresh avocado in any form. Aside from dips, love slicing it up to put on a salad, sandwich, burger or on the side for breakfast during the summer.

I'm also a garden tomato fan but got tired of fighting off deer and squirrels. Didn't plant any this year for the first time. Tried everything save fencing off my property or keeping a dog outside. I hate squirrels. We have hoards of 'em in the neighborhood as I live in a wooded subdivision with oak and hickory trees. Might as well be a hotel vacancy sign blinking for the little bastards. They dig up our mulch, eat our bird seed and steal tomatoes. I even bought a trap several years ago. Probably caught near 60 over 3 years. Didn't kill 'em. Relocation program. I doubt I made much of a dent in their (over) population. Bastards.

If you did not relocate them about 10 miles or more away, you were catching the same ones over and over. Shoot the first one and the word will spread....or so I'm told.

This ain't catch and release...at least that is what I tell the english bulldog and Great Dane who are on patrol in the back yard. I love big mutts and I cannot lie....

As far as coons, live trap and whack if you are allowed or drive them 2 counties away and dump them. Those suckers will spend a month walking back home

yeah, i'm too much of a coward for live traps. i couldn't even do it to a stray cat. and it's also not like i have a truck (which i really want) so the damn thing would be in the back of our honda fit next to a car seat. how the hell do you release it? open the cage and run?

RE: Beer Beer Goggles
They are the ugliest things on earth when caged. Its a sight to behold...from a safe distance. I know a few guys who trap but they solve the rabid ugliness with a 36 grain .22 round.

Not that I condone such activities, but in the city a good quality pump .177 cal BB/pellet gun when they bite the barrel when you poke it into the cage has a similar calming effect. I love wildlife but raccoons are not sweet and are only one rung up above yotes in my book....mature coons are dangerous as hell when they don't get their way and can easily kill dogs.

RE: Beer Beer Goggles
As far as keeping raccoons off of your property...it's impossible if you compost or use food scraps in the garden or have fruit trees, etc. They come for the human activity that they equate with food. Once they make that connection, you are on the regular rotation.

Have not seen Flower Power in a while. That's a good one. I have a Headhunter IPA in hand.

I typically drove about 2 miles away and released them in a rural, wooded area. Maybe it wasn't far enough or neighborhood friendly enough. Shooting a few and leaving their dead carcasses in the yard may be the best option.
