I seem to recall much hand wringing over the sabre rattling that Iran has done over the years.

Iran is loco, China at least knows it would be financial suicide to do anything other than sabre rattle. To compare the two is foolish.

Too each it's own. I think more people in this country have more to fear from China than from Iran.

We will certainly hope not.

Of course, they could just decide to stop buying American debt until communications between the US and Taiwan cease, for example.

Yeesh

You've clearly never been to China, or met normal Chinese people who just want to live life, as you do.

I was referring to China's Communist overlords, but you already knew that.

Wasn't clear at all.

But now that you've made it clear, I have more sympathy for negative feelings towards the Chinese ruling party.

Great... and we can decide to stop buying Chinese goods or we can just devalue all the debt they currently hold.

Where are they going to safely put their money?

I think Mexico and Japan and Taiwan and India and South Korea and Haiti and Africa and South America would be happy to have some of those jobs we currently create in China.

The point is that 'not buying our debt' is not on remotely the same scale as 'taking a congratulatory call from Taiwan'. If they want to make it so, then that's their call and it will come with its own consequences. Publicly acknowledging something that everyone in the world knows takes place (that we talk to Taiwan) is ridiculous... and if the Chinese want to get all worked up over than, then they can do something to make us stop. How about they increase diplomatic pressure on N. Korea? That would be far less disruptive to THEIR OWN economy than the ceasing of normal relationships with the world's largest economy.

We're the tall hog at the trough. We need to stop acting like we're the dog whose been beaten too much. No, that doesn't mean we have to be a bully, but it does mean that we don't need to kiss the asses of other bullies. Acknowledging a call from Taiwan is NOT being a bully.

I'm shocked at how many liberals support the oppressive Chinese government over Taiwan such that they're not even allowed to call people. Pretend Taiwan is their trans-gendered little brother.

Yep, ECON 101. The whole "China has all our debt" thing is a talking point. They need us more than we need them, even if they hold lots of US debt.

No. We have China buy it's balls. Their economy depends upon good relations with the US. We could Negan them now and get away with it.

You know we can't just decide to do either of them. Certainly not without starting a war, on the last one.

But that's the scary thing with Trump: anything's on the table and you can't predict if he'll grab a fork or a machete on any particular meal.

You are giving more reason why China won't do anything.

Ok then, if neither of us will do anything all the better. Just more sabre rattling. We'll do our thing and China will keep building fake islands, etc.

Agree that the fake islands are an issue.

Certainly not one to go to war over. Nor is something stupid like communicating with Taiwan.

Except that as the leader of the free world it's the right thing to do to publicly support a democracy over the wishes of an oppressive communist government.

What is telling about your response is that you think China would go to war with us if we do something bad enough to them, but ignore that we could just as easily go to war with them if they do something bad enough to us.

The TRUTH is that we would never get that far... either of us... but you're so afraid of China's shadow that you're willing to act like publicly acknowledging a 'congratulations' call from one of our top trade partners puts us at risk

It's ridiculous for us to be that chicken

Quote:But in seriousness, like I said they're not making it so -- they're treating it like the rookie mistake that it was.

Except they aren't. That's just the narrative that 'your side' is throwing out there to try and discredit Trump for anything and everything.

You're just demonstrating your intent to argue for the sole purpose of arguing. If I want to do that, I'll find a 13 year old to converse with.

Our relationship with China has nothing to do with our average life expectancy or test scores. It has to do with global economic power.

Only because you ignore that we don't ship many farm or manufacturing products to China, and we likely import a multiple of what we DO ship... So while they might lose the Chinese market for their goods, they pick up at least SOME of the manufacturing of products exported TO us.

AND that the premise is merely a statement of fact, and not a realistic option for anyone... which is the entire point.

You keep acting like we should be afraid of pissing off China, and all that is being said is that 'respect' is a two-way street. They should be AT LEAST as afraid of pissing US off.
