I hope I don't need to explain what "x axis" means to a mechanical engineer ...

The X-Axis is clearly number of pirates....which is decreasing. The Y-Axis is temp. Each year has a number of pirates and temp associated, and were plotted appropriately. It just so happens that the dates correlated with an increase in temp & decrease in pirates. This graph allows for the dates to be out of order.

If in 1940, there were 20000 pirates, and the temp was 14.45, the graph dates would read: 1820, 1860, 1940, 1880, 1920, 1980, 2000

That'd be a pretty terrible axis to plot against....

Would that make it part of the axis of evil?
