RE: Pearl Harbor Day: 7Dec16
The oil droplets still bubbling up get to me every time.
As for the other theme on here, my dad was set to go to West Point to play football when the war broke out. He was doing his prep school year at a junior college in Georgia. When Pearl Harbor happened, he went into the Army Air Corps. He ended up flying B-24s on the Ploiesti raids (the highest casualty rates of any WWII action), got his missions done, and came back home. He was in Boise, Idaho, transitioning to B-25s to fly the invasion of Japan when Truman dropped the bomb. Within a month he was home and married, and then came my brother and me.
Taking my mom to Hiroshima several years ago, and having her go through the whole story, was quite an emotional experience.

Thanks for sharing. Your father's sacrifice is incredible.
I am sorry he missed out on playing for Coach Blaik.

I appreciate that you did that. Nothing was mentioned at either of my kids' schools today. Sad and disgraceful.

Both my 7th and 4th grader had discussions about Pearl Harbor at school today. Pleasantly surprised.

Was flipping through channels last night and came across this film: December 7th: The Movie and was hooked. Filmed in 1943 during the second world war. I had never heard of it. The film (short version) won an Oscar but I watched the long version. Apparently the long version was censored for decades and the shorter 32-minute version released. Recommend for any history buff.

I remember going as a kid and being shocked at how rude some of the tourists are at the memorial, particularly how loud some people are.
The memorial itself was more than an 8 or 9 year old can process but I still thought it was very cool, even though I was disappointed that from the memorial you cannot see a whole lot of the ship.

Quote:White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said during a press conference Monday it was natural for World War II veterans to be “embittered” about Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to Pearl Harbor, but they should get over it for the sake of America.
It was announced Monday that Abe will be the first Japanese leader to visit Pearl Harbor since it was hit by a surprise attack that killed 2,403 Americans and brought the U.S. into World War II. The visit reciprocates President Barack Obama’s visit to Hiroshima earlier this year for the anniversary of the atomic bomb attack on the city.
Abe said in a short statement he would pray for those who died in the war, but gave no indication he would express regret for Japan’s surprise attack.

My God, this joke of a President can't get out of office fast enough. What a POS.

No mention at all in SCD Jr's class or school yesterday. Pathetic!
So we had our own discussion last night about Japan and the Axis of Evil with regards to Germany and Italy.

Thanks. I used to be a history teacher so showing my kids clips of significant historical events was commonplace for me.
I no longer teach history but I still think it is appropriate. We had a wonderful discussion about it afterward.

Our kids did not talk about it at school so we watched some documentaries and talked about it last night.

As sad as Pearl Harbor is, I was weeping when reading stories about it. Especially those about the men trapped beneath the water.
Just remember America won in the end and we got our justified revenge.

If I ever made it out there and some loudmouth is talking loudly, I will gladly spend a night in jail for the right to punch their teeth out. It is the least I could do for those heroes.
