God Bless John Glenn!

I wonder if Obama will send a representative to the funeral?

While he was fairly liberal from what I recall, I don't think he was enough of a socialist to warrant a presidental rep at his funeral.

Circled the globe three times IIRC, and also seem to recall that it was he whose heart beat barely rose as he reentered earth's atmosphere, something no one was 100% sure a man could survive. Nads of steel.

We know him as the astronaut, as the Senator, but he also fought in Korea with an interesting wingman. Yes, THAT Ted Williams.

Interesting. The first astronaut and the last .400 hitter.

Thanks for the reminder. He did indeed. The oldest person to ever fly in outer space.

Yup, was gonna mention that too. Something most 27 YO's wouldn't qualify physically for.

RIP. Lived a full life, that's for sure.

RIP John Glenn. He's one of the few of the older astronauts that I didn't meet. I met Shepard, Truly, Schmidt, John Young, etc. by virtue of refueling their T-38s, and F-104s that came to the Transient Terminal at the airport. I've gotten about 55 NASA patches and more than 100 photos of the space program. A few autographed pictures of the astronauts too. What I love about those are they're signed to me by the particular astronaut. Sometimes I wonder how much my collection is worth. I know one thing my grandkids are going to be the lucky ones as I'll be giving them my collection.

RE: Former Astronaut and Senator John Glenn died today
I just remembered that we used to have a large shadow box with all the past and current NASA patches under lock. A supervisor got a rock that looked like what anyone would think a moon rock would looked like (it was probably from his back yard) and he placed it in the box with a sign that said "moon rock" and we tried hard not to laugh when people would ask us about it and we would tell them that that's what it was.

Not to demean Mr. Glenn's accomplishments but we still have a couple of space heroes alive in Buzz Aldrin (who had his own recent health scare after traveling to the South Pole!) and Chuck Yeager (he's 93).

I wonder if our first travelers to Mars will be looked upon with awe like the Mercury 7 members?

RIP and God Speed.
