Funny thing is that almost by design the UN is destined to fail because of the simple fact that the US, Russia and China (along with the UK and France) all have veto power within the security council.

And world wars have been deterred by nuclear weapons.

The original was the statist Wilson's grand idea, but the framework of the UN was fleshed out by FDR. Two individuals who gave little care to the rights of American citizens in their unrelenting pursuit of the all powerful central government. Both share responsibility for the way we are today and if the world were truly just they would have both been shot for treason for the damage they did to our country.

One could make a case for world war being deterred by NATO. The U.N. is a clown show

The UN is as useful as a paper fire iron. They can't stop genocide in Rwanda. They aren't going to prevent wars.

^This. Nuclear arms and MAD have given the world peace from WWIII, not the UN.

I don't believe this for a second. I have no problem with having an organization that would actually do that though. The UN is less than effective at actually accomplishing peace. Pretty much a giant coffee clutch for bureaucratic diplomats.
