Damage is already done.

The first thing a GOP-controlled Congress tried to do was gut rules that police Congressional corruption.

RE: House GOP votes to gut independent ethics office
If you have issues and complaints with the ethics office, you do some ethics reform that makes it better. You don't just sneak in and hamstring the ethics office.

One way you appear as a champion of ethics reform, the other you appear as a sketchy enabler of corruption.

Republicans are terrible about being ham-handed.

Motion was apparently introduced by this icon of American manhood, Blake Farenthold of Texas, who was investigated by the OCE for, believe it or not, sexual harassment:

Isn't that the purview of the DOJ and FBI? That was really my main point. The fact near no one else on this board, including many that know a fair amount about the inner-workings of stuff like this, have even heard of the Office tells me it isn't doing a whole heck of a lot. They don't even have any form enforcement abilities.
Beef up the other institutions (If need be) that should be investigating the vast corruption and especially incompetence, and do our damnedest to NOT make it politicized like we've had the last 8 years. Then we got something.

I like this idea although as we've seen, it's not like Obama hasn't politicized the DOJ and FBI...but if they want to start trimming away some of the fatted calf bloat that is in Washington - this wasn't a very good place to start. The optics alone are horrible. Better to start with gutting the EPA or Education Department first!03-cloud9

RE: House GOP votes to gut independent ethics office
It was hardly a "gutting."

In fact, what it did was seek to impose some standard legal protections that were being denied to those being investigated. For example, anonymous tips to the press that may be unsupported and damaging to an individual's reputation.

Regardless, it was a political version of a stubbed toe for the Republicans.

Reforms and protections may be needed. But to do that as your first act and to do it in the dark of night. Are they really that clueless/careless about PR???

My general rule of thumb is anything that you try to vote on quickly and in secret is a bad idea. Same way we got HB2, they did it in the dark of night and no one even knew about it till it was law. Outside of matters of national security there should not be secret votes of any kind.

Sounds like zerOcare and how we got that obomination. Everyone remember when it was posted, in full, to the internet before any votes were taken? Me neither.
