Question about BIG bylaws
Does the Big Ten have a bylaw stating that all schools must be in contiguous states or not. I've read that we do and don't have that bylaw.

RE: Question about BIG bylaws
Don't know the real answer but this feels appropriate

I *think* it is a guideline and not a rule. Like AAU.

No. It's only a preference.

RE: Question about BIG bylaws
No worries. Welcome to the board! This board tends to be a little slower during non-football season unless there is any real news. But you're welcome to post. Always love to see another Terps fan on here.

RE: Question about BIG bylaws
There have been a number of thread that have talked about them before. I *think* most believe Kansas and Oklahoma are more likely than Texas and as Dexter's comment shows, many would prefer those two to Teas.

The schools I'd personally be okay with would be any mix of Kansas, Missouri, Pitt, or Oklahoma.

Well, I've read in the past on these boards that the B1G has been in contact with Texas for decades now, and nearly landed them after the SWC imploded.

RE: Question about BIG bylaws
No the Pac-10 nearly landed Texas at the implosion. Texas A&M was ready to go to the SEC and Texas to the Pac-10 with Colorado. But then the Texas government intervened and said Texas and Texas A&M had to go together. They were approached by the Big 8 which wanted to merge with the SWC into a 16 school league. Long story made short, after a lot of internal Texas politicking, they went back to the Big 8 and said well merge, but just four schools: Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Baylor.

The B1G was much closer in 2011 when they almost got Texas. It's still unclear to me what exactly happened. But after that Nebraska joined the B1G instead, and you know the rest, A&M finally went to the SEC and Colorado finally joined the Pac-12 (note the regents vote was 6 to 3 to join the B1g 12 over the Pac-12 ...a lot closer than people realize). Nebraska in turn had been talking to the B1G on and off forever as well.

Texas was desirable because the BTN was about to start up, and they could see the value even back then.

I mentioned Texas because they are not contiguous and they were courted as a 12th. They still aren't contiguous. So obviously that is not an issue if the value is high enough.

RE: Question about BIG bylaws
I heard Texas applied to join the Big Ten in like 1993 but because the Big Ten had a moratorium on expansion due to the recent addition to Penn State, Texas was told "not yet."

That's what I read before as well.
