TV package getting worse this year
The CAA is the 12th rated league by KenPom, 11th in RPI, with two teams in the top 100, four in the top 125.

It is better than leagues such as the MAC, Ivy and Conference USA, and almost equal to the West Coast (the league that Gonzaga is in) and the Missouri Valley, yet the TV package this year is worse than a league like the Big South (who has a Thursday night package on ESPNU and the championship finals on ESPN this year).

ASN has a 9 game package this year, and all of them so far have been called from a studio in West Palm Beach or Kansas City. They mispronounce names and players frequently. Also, the games are unavailable unless your RSN or local channel has space and happens to pick them up. Their contract runs out after this year.

CSN has 13 games, but 6 of them are during the CAA tourney. I know CSN has done some cutbacks (cutting their Nats and O's reporters), but out of the regular season, every game but one will be done from either Towson or William & Mary (which coincidentally are the two easiest to get to from DC). CofC's TV games are good productions, but those are online only outside of the Charleston area.

Not having the Thursday night games and DHs the league had the last few years has hurt the visibility of the league this year.

For next year, Commissioner D'Antonio needs to get games back on a major national network. Be it FS1/2, CBSSN (where the CAA finals will be this year), or one of the ESPNs, even for a small number of games plus the championship, this would help the visibility of the league. What are your thoughts?

Any shot at renegotiating with NBCSN? I really loved that deal for us.

It seems that NBCSN is moving away from their college football/basketball deals in favor of hockey & premiership soccer.

The ASN games aren't being "called from a studio". They just do the pregame shows from there. But I agree that the announcers are subpar. I actually like the ASN deal as a secondary deal, and I hope it gets renewed. The Drexel/COC game on Saturday was broadcast live in about 30 states and most major markets, so it was in essence, a national game.

I think this is just a transitional year, since NBC backed out of the deal at the last minute. I'm sure that there will be something better in place next year. But we all have to remember that even though the CAA is having a great year, it's still a mid-major conference that the majority of Americans do not care about. Any TV contract that we get will be sort of a break even type deal, and not a big time money deal like the Power 6-7 get.
If i hear "He's going right down main street" one more time, someone is getting hurt :)

It appears that American Sports Network is out of the question for the CAA in the future as they are ceasing operations. This is a shame. While I've heard a lot of criticism about that network, I thought that they served the CAA and some other conferences quite well. They got the CAA some games on TV that might not have been otherwise. I also like how they took advantage of using local substations, instead of trying to be your typical 2nd tier cable network.

I'm not surprised. Although they put at lot of football, hoops and hockey games on, it was clearly a second rate production.

I mean the hockey analyst was a former goalie from Stony Brook! Really?

Maybe second rate. But compared to most schools' in-house productions on CAA.TV, the ASN broadcasts were like watching the Super Bowl.

I'm just hoping that we get a new contract that still provides a significant amount of professional TV broadcasts and aren't limited to just streaming.

Well I don't think it was that bad overall. We got paid more from NBC than we would have ESPN and the Comcast Sports Networks have always done a very good job with our coverage. Look at other leagues of our stature and our TV presence historically has always been pretty solid in comparison. What sucked was giving up the 7 PM monday night slot on ESPN for our championship game, killing the ESPN Bracketbusters concept, and having our championship game this year end up on the black hole that is CBS Sports Network.

Moving foward IMO I think the league would be best served by having the majority men's basketball games and other major conference events on ESPN 3 with ESPN family of TV networks cherry picking a handful of our best games for national broadcast. ESPN 3 is the broadest platform we can realistically expect to be on on a regular basis. CAA.TV can stick around for the coverage ESPN does not want to put up on ESPN 3.

As we saw with the Clemson game, the schools produce much of the ESPN 3 coverage so I can understand the resistance from the CAA member schools to pay out of their pocket to upgrade equipment and other items to meet ESPN 3 standards when there is already CAA.TV that is doing the same thing.

The biggest negative from that move in my opinion is our presence on traditional TV would be virtually non existent. For me and people my age that is really not a big deal, but for many older people, like my Seahawk club member grandmother, they would miss those traditional TV games on Comcast Sports and ASN that were picked up here locally on WILM. Look back at this year's CAA tournament. For the typical Wilmington resident/casual fan it was easier to watch the QF's and SF's than the Finals. However with the death of ASN at the end of the month, those local pickups might have died anyways.

Realistically our options are:
To go all in with ESPN like the OVC, Horizon, and Big South have done. Big South Sports online is still around but most of the content people actually want to watch is on ESPN 3 unless it is one of the handful of games picked up by one of the ESPN tv networks, most likely ESPN U. We would likely get our Monday night 7 PM slot back on ESPN.

To find alternatives to ESPN like CUSA. NBC is not interested and neither is FOX. That leaves the black hole that is CBS Sports Network, which I think we all would say no too, BEIN Sports, an international sports channel trying to elbow its way into the US market, and online platforms like Campus Insider, which is really no different than CAA.TV although the quality would be much better. They would likely pay more than ESPN but when you are making pennies on the dollar from ESPN are the nickles from the alternatives worth it?

To find some mixture. Give ESPN the rights to our premium content for nothing or pennies on the dollar and let them put it where they see best while shopping a handful of games to outlets like Comcast Sports Networks and CBS Sports Network for some kind of traditional TV coverage and Campus Insiders or CAA.TV for online coverage.

Again my preference is to find some type of mixture. Ideally i would like to see 4 or 5 games on an ESPN TV network with the rest on ESPN 3 for guaranteed quality online streaming while local and regional networks like Comcast Sports having some TV only rights to get us on TV in our core areas. I don't know how likely that is, but something like the MVC has would be ideal.

RE: TV package getting worse this year
We don't want to rely too heavily on streaming as the main source of content. Streaming content is only for the diehard fans who are specifically looking to watch a particular game from start to finish. ESPN3 and CAA.TV games bring in little to no exposure for the games. ESPN3 is fine for most of the non-televised games. But you need games on regular TV to expose the casual fans, and those who are flipping for something to watch, to your product. I really hope that they can continue their partnership with NBC Regional Networks to produce at least 1 game of the week for both Men's and Women's Basketball, and even football too. There are just so many NBA/NHL games on these networks and the CSN's still need additional live content to air on their channels. Considering that the TV markets match up well with the locations of many of the member schools, NBC Regional is the perfect fit for the CAA.

RE: TV package getting worse this year
ESPN losing $$$ and slashing budgets due to the cord-cutting effects of cable can only mean one thing. The Cable Sports coverage bubble has burst. Smaller start-up companies like ASN will likely come and go for awhile but realistically, these smaller networks will die. Streaming revenue seems to be significantly lower than cable and I doubt it will ever be as high.

Collectively, these things, while also accounting for the P5 attempts at separation, means that mid-majors will soon only be broadcast when they play the P5. In a few years, younger people will grow up understanding the P5 as the only true representatives of college sports. Cable coverage has essentially created major leagues for college across the board. Cinderellas will continue to be rare and most of the country seems to not care about them until the tourney, so theres no need to show their regular season games.

But hey, streaming is killing traditional cable anyway and now unlimited satellite data is affordable so its only a matter of time until the point is moot. All TV will be streaming. ESPN3 is the future...well actually almost the present...

A package that allows us to simultaneously have games on Comcast regional for TV along with espn3 for steaming would be ideal. If espn wants to pick up a couple of games for espnu awesome if not I would focus on making sure our regions had optimal tv coverage, which Comcast allows

That's always been the case for the Power 5 anyway. My blind guess would say that 97& of nationally televised CBB involved the top 7 or 8 conferences. When the mid-majors do make it on national TV, it's just time fillers. So as SoloHawk has been saying, the CAA needs to focus on a regional TV contract with a streaming option, rather than a national TV contract.

That's the problem with CofC. We get a lot of coverage in the Charleston area (I think 15 games were shown OTA this year, 12 on MyTV and 3 on a MeTV sub channel), but outside of the Charleston area, you're relying on dodgy CAA.tv or the few games ASN and CSN carried.

No reason that ESPN3 can't pick up the CSN games. When CSS (Comcast's southeast network) was on the air, CofC's local games basically were on regional cable TV. You could watch the games from Mississippi to Miami. They also picked up the regional CAA games for years, meaning that the CAA basically had TV coverage throughout the east coast.

They went OTA though when the SEC Network started because it took most of their big programming (SEC baseball games and low-level football and basketball).

Id rather have quality local and regional coverage with little to no national coverage outside of streaming instead of everyone from Wilmington to Washington State having to watch on an obscure nationwide cable channel

This is exactly my opinion. I'd love to see the league pursue a great regional contract.

Yeah I had a very similar reaction the first time they cut to the studio during intermission. How am I supposed to take club team credentials seriously?

Apparently ASN is NOT shutting down, they are just relocating from FL to NY, thus all their FL based employees got laid off spurring word of a complete shutdown.

Wilmington just got full time ASN via WILM subchannel 10.3/24.3.

I dont think its on Charter/Time Warner yet if you have an over the air antenna in Wilmington this is a new 24/7 channel available and will probably do at least the CAA baseball championship
