We aren't getting anything for Cozart. He gone.
I'd rather stick with Suarez and move him to SS or 2B to allow room for Senzel. He is 26 years old, hasn't hit his prime yet, is still controlled for a bit, etc.
We need pitching more than anything and need to count on one or two more of our young guys to step up and deliver.

Castillo looks like the real deal and Sal seems to be really coming on. Add in the other 3 and you have the makings of a solid staff. But that's the rub - can you really count on the other 3 to be healthy and productive coming off their injuries? Odds are probably against it although there are some other good young candidates if one or more can put it all together as Castillo seems to have.
The Reds have a lot of decisions to make and a lot of plausible options. I'm open to trading anyone for the right price and Iglesias and Suarez are perhaps our most valuable chips taking salary into account. On the other hand, is it worth the risk of creating holels in one of the few spots that seem solid? And that's especially true when you look at the rest of the bullpen if you were to trade Iglesias.

Just thought I'd whet some appetites with some hype for Senzel:
somebody on Redszone noted that it looked like he was floating in the picture and another offered up this amazing old gem:
Apparently no photoshop on either btw. Well I thought it was cool. That's all.

Bruces Pic is after he ran and put his foot on the wall and came off. You can see his spike mark on the A in the pic. But still a cool pic.

Good for him. He proved a lot of skeptics wrong (including quite a few very insistent ones here) with the way he's hit the last few years. He's become Votto lite at the plate which is pretty nice coming from a SS with great defense.
Part of me really wishes we could have kept him but I understand why we didn't even though the price wasn't too bad (just under $13M/year for 3 years). Unfortunately we won't get the big compensation for him since we didn't offer the one year deal which would have been around $16M I think.
Reds have several options now at SS, but they all come with risk. Ideally, Peraza claims the job, fields well and gets enough hits that it makes up for his lack of walks.

won't we get compensated via draft pick or something how does that work? no sense trying to leverage his stout defense and breakout 32 year old campaign at the expense of moving senzel into the lineup. i don't know if that is the plan. lots of cards to move?
not many folks left from the aught thirteen playoff years. i'm sure todd coffey's still warming up

The Reds didn't make a qualifying offer so no compensation.

Gone like he never happened. Which seems strange since he was mentioned as perpetual trade bait when healthy over the past 3 years.
But by God we have 1st base covered like a major market team.

RE: Baseball Season 2017
so billy and the giants are feeling each other. isn't their farm system crap? they got any more duvall's? if it was any other team i'd be excited but at least it'll clear some room. i never thought billy was more than a trade chip even though i could live with him if so be it.

They have one decent guy (Ramos), but they say they won't trade him. He'd be about the Reds 7th best prospect, which is still really good. Other than that, there isn't much there.

RE: Baseball Season 2017
Time to point out some more Joey Votto incredibleness, this time from espn's Buster Olney and his ranking of the top 10 1B in baseball. I'm not even going to pretend there's drama about who is #1:
Quote:1. Joey Votto, Cincinnati Reds
Votto made up his mind before last season that he wanted to do everything he could, within each plate appearance, to not strike out. As the ball-strike count got deeper, Votto would choke up on the bat a little more, he would shorten his swing -- and the contact rate for the best hitter in baseball rose, dramatically. His rate of swing-and-misses fell from 7.1 to 5.7 percent, and his rate of swinging at pitches outside the zone fell to 15.8 percent, the best in the majors.
In this way, Votto reduced his strikeouts from 120 in 2016 to just 83 last season, and he drew 134 walks, with 71 extra-base hits, and finished the season with a .454 on-base percentage. He also led all first basemen in defensive runs saved. And while a lot of evaluators consider some of the defensive metrics a work in progress in how they properly reflect the most valued skills at the position, this was Votto’s best season in DRS -- and significantly better than in 2016, when he scored a minus-14.
About Votto’s Hall of Fame résumé: His second-place finish in the 2017 National League MVP voting was the seventh time he has finished in the top 10, including his first-place year of 2010. His career on-base percentage of .428 is 11th best all time, and eight of the 10 ahead of him played all or the bulk of their respective careers before 1940. He has reached base 2,629 times in his career via hit, walk or hit by pitch.
