Yeah, I can't speak to their situation. However, Pitt Stadium was really cool. If anyone has ever been to Notre Dame Stadium, it was a very similar design.

Of course it was rarely full like Notre Dame Stadium always is, and it had fallen into disrepair after decades of neglect. However, when you walked into Pitt Stadium you could just feel the history and tradition.

You can't really replace that.

Honestly, Heinz Field has not been as bad as I feared. I don't think it's a perfect solution but I sometimes think that it's opponents overstate it as a problem. It definitely has far better amenities and the parking situation is 10 times better.

Parking at a Pitt game when it was at Pitt Stadium was a *****. You would walk up a giant hill into the stadium that the locals derisively called "Cardiac Hill" because of all of the heart attacks that had taken place over the years while Pitt fans were en route to home games.

Also, the area where the University of Pittsburgh is located is called Oakland and it is the third largest commerce area in the state of Pennsylvania - behind only downtown Pittsburgh and Center City Philadelphia. Oakland also basically has just a few ways in and out. Therefore, getting to and especially from a Pitt football game when they played on campus was definitely a challenge.

Look, I think they should play on campus as well. Also, as I said earlier, I think tearing down Pitt Stadium was ultimately a mistake. However, it was definitely a 55-45 decision either way. It was never as simple as people make it out to be.

Here's an article from last fall about Penn possibly restarting hockey. They have an existing rink on campus and with Columbia are the only Ivy League schools that don't have hockey.

- I know Wisconsin isn't as big of a hockey state as some of it's neighbors, but they can probably handle more than the one program they currently have. Marquette had a team in the 20's and 30's and it's location would seem to be a positive for fan support. If not Marquette, UW-Milwaukee or UW-GB?
Throw in Depaul, Creighton, Butler, Xavier with Marquette and Providence, and there could be Big East hockey.

A new arena in downtown Champaign?

Developer of "Downtown Champaign Hotel Project To Move South, Merge with Illinois Terminal Expansion, Seek Hockey & Event Arena Partnership" #WCIA

Sure, if the NHL is going to fund an endowment to pay for the scholarships and head coach.

If they want big time college hockey, they need to pay for it.

The NHL kicking off NCAA hockey expansion project with Illinois without a real arena was almost unthinkable. Now we see the substance behind it.

Until the four parties (city, university, developer, and transit district) actually meet, I'll pass. It's clear the developer is low on funds and access to credit.

It has some critical mass as a lot of interesting parties including the Illinois athletic department for volleyball and gymnastics. A USHL college prep team would be good too. Downtown Bloomington down the round has one. Can have a lot of activity going on.

The developer was very eager to tell the media present about the number of restaurants in downtown Champaign near the transit center.

He's desperate for the creation of a TIF. Desperate

I used to go to ND games at Pitt Stadium (growing up an ND fan in Western Pa.) and definitely recall Cardiac Hill. I also remember the track around the field.

It would have been cool to renovate Pitt Stadium instead of tearing it down.

With all of the Olympic presence in Utah, if there's any place that should have college hockey, it is Utah.

Our AD doesn't do formal public feasibility studies until the internal studies have shown it's a winning proposition. The word is that hockey will follow Lacrosse in moving to NCAS D1. I expect that the hockey study will follow the football stadium expansion study.

Developer has a different idea for proposed indoor UI sports arena.

Excerpts from article:

Champaign developer Peter Fox believes there's a better site for an indoor University of Illinois multisports center: right across the street from State Farm Center, at the southwest corner of St. Mary's Road and Fourth Street.

"I think it's an easier, cheaper, more logical site," he said.

That's in comparison with another plan, unveiled in July, to build an arena in downtown Champaign as part of what developer Hans Grotelueschen said could be a $150 million project that also would include a hotel, conference center, office building and expansion of the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District's Illinois Terminal building."

"What we're trying to say is that it can be ready quickly, it's a suitable site because all the utilities are at the site, and in addition we built two new drainage ponds that will handle all the stormwater, including the feed mill site if something were to be built there," he said.

"It also is the only site in C-U with chilled water (part of a 2004 UI project extended to the site). The benefit of the chilled water is that it's substantially cheaper, 15 to 20 percent, in terms of utility bills. And it's quiet because you don't have those massive condensers, and the reliability is better."

"There also are 4,000 parking spaces nearby, Fox said, and 700 hotel rooms within a quarter-mile."

So we're back to 2003-04 as that's the same basic site.

The southeastern part of campus (South Farms) has expanded development since 2003-2004. Champaign County constructed the Curtis Road/I-57 Interchange in 2008. This allows travelers from Chicago to take I-57 all the way south to Curtis Road and completely bypass northern Champaign + downtown traffic. The 700-room I-Hotel, which is located directly west across the street from the proposed arena, also opened in 2008 after the interchange was completed. Also, the Research Park, which is one of the main customers of the I-Hotel and Houlighan's--the restaurant which is attached to the hotel, received about $1 billion in funding from 2001-2014. This expanded the available parking to about 4,000 spaces after the Research Park's expansion. So, yeah, the GPS co-ordinates of the proposed site of the ice arena haven't changed, but access to the interstate, increased parking, available hotel rooms and dining have greatly increased.
