RE: CUSA offseason baseball thread
USM comes in at #33 (up from #78) on D1Baseball's ranking of college baseball programs...

https://d1baseball.com/rankings/top-100-...ngs-31-40/

Quote:33. Southern Mississippi

2005 Rank: 88. The Golden Eagles have steadily improved their profile over the past few seasons. USM has strong tradition and made the program’s first and only CWS appearance under Corky Palmer back in 2009. USM made back-to-back postseason appearances in 2010 and ’11, fresh off that CWS berth. However, the Golden Eagles took an unexpected step back with four-straight seasons without a postseason berth. The good news? USM made a trip to the Tallahassee Regional two seasons ago before hosting and falling short to in-state foe Mississippi State in the Hattiesburg Regional this past season. USM has one of the better facilities at its level and enjoys a strong recruiting base with access both to the Magnolia State and Louisiana.

Personally, I think USM should have cracked the Top 30 based on their performance over the past 2 years, and since D1Baseball's previous ranking.

Heard from a reliable source that Rice's weekend non-conference schedule (unsure of exact order) will be:

Gonzaga (2017 RPI-50)
Houston Baptist (2017 RPI-119)
@Stanford (2017 RPI-13)
@UCF Tournament (UCF RPI-26, unsure of other teams)

I like this schedule a lot more than the meat grinder we played in 2017. While Gonzaga and HBU aren't big names, they certainly won't hurt our RPI.

That's a good OOC.

We'll see what USM comes up with this year. Traditionally, Berry will get 1 semi-challenging series then have 3 cupcakes. These next 2 years we have Mississippi State, which is the biggest name we've played in an OOC series since Fullerton crushed us in '08 and '09. Pure guess, but I expect one road series/neutral tournament (extremely rare for us to play every OOC series at home).... maybe at Troy or in Pensacola tourney? Then 2 weaker opponents in a guarantee series in Hattiesburg.

I can cconfirm Stanford and UCF tourney, which is the season-opener vs. UCF, Virginia and Sanford. Stanford, UCF and UVA will all be pre-season Top 35. Gonzaga would be a quality addition...and HBU is solid enough to not adversely impact our OOC RPI. Another strong schedule, especially recognizing that our mid-week games will include our annual matchups vs. Houston x 3, TCU, A&M, Sam Houston State x 2 and Dallas Baptist-- all likely Top 35 opponents.

RE: CUSA offseason baseball thread
If I got to draw USM's schedule up:

- top 25 program in a guarantee road series (or H/H if we can get it like MSU series)
- H/H series with a top flight non power school (ULL, DBU, UNCW, MoState, Houston, etc)
- guarantee home series vs top 100 southern mid-major (Winthrop, Oral Roberts, Tennessee Tech, etc)
- guarantee home series vs mid 100s snowbird (Northeastern, St. Bonaventure's, Central Connecticut)

Midweek rotation is fine with ULL, UNO, USA, State, OM, Alabama, Tulane, etc. I'd also look at possibly starting up a tourney in Biloxi, because you can draw a better field there than you would in Hattiesburg. We had the old Hattiesburg Coca-Cola Classic tourney but it never drew a great field. Easier for teams to get to Biloxi + more corporations down there that can throw $$$ at teams to get them to play.

2005 - USM, Missouri State, McNeese, Mercer
2007 - USM, Louisville (before their program took off, this was the year they went to Omaha which jumpstarted their program into the powerhouse it is today), NW State, Southern Illinois
2008 - USM, Liberty, CS Northridge .... just 3 teams this year
2013 - USM, Missouri State, Eastern Illinois, Alcorn

RE: CUSA offseason baseball thread
Rice #23.

https://d1baseball.com/rankings/top-100-...s-21-30-2/

Rice finished sixth in Conference USA and went just 33-31 overall this spring, its lowest win total since Wayne Graham’s first year in 1992. Yet even in a down year, the Owls still found a way to extend their regionals streak to 23 straight years by winning the C-USA tournament, marking the 22nd time in 23 years they have captured either a regular-season or conference tournament title. Graham’s sparkling legacy also includes 10 super regional appearances, seven trips to Omaha and the 2003 national title. That’s an incredible body of work at a program that had never even been to a regional before 1995. The Owls deserve credit for remaining very competitive annually and keeping their postseason streak alive — that’s no small feat. But there’s no escaping the fact that the Owls fallen from the ranks of the elite over the last decade. Their last CWS trip was in 2008, and they’ve won just one regional in the last eight years, in 2013. Their last 40-win season came in 2014. There’s nothing wrong with winning 37 games and making a regional, but Rice fans became conditioned to expect more by the program’s run of six Omaha appearances in eight years from 2002-08. Graham is a living legend who has earned the right to coach as long as he wants, especially since he keeps on making the postseason — but the 81-year-old is no spring chicken, and he can’t coach forever (right?). He had to hire two new assistants this offseason, so there’s no obvious succession plan in place, leaving the long-term future of the program in some question. Still, Graham has built a program that should endure as a national contender long after he’s gone. Reckling Park remains a wonderful facility nestled on a beautiful campus at an elite academic institution with loads of institutional aid at its disposal. And the Owls have done a great job mining for talent in the baseball-rich Houston area for a long time now. This program still has a whole lot going for it.

Quote:UNDER-THE-RADAR RECRUITING CLASSES

Western Kentucky

After a last-place finish in Conference USA this spring, Western Kentucky brought in a large crop of junior college transfers who should be able to help spur a quick turnaround. Lefthander Troy Newell was drafted this year in the 33rd round by the Rangers and provides plenty of upside for the Hilltoppers. He was sidelined for the 2016 season, but got stronger as his redshirt-sophomore season went on, running his fastball up to 92 mph to go with a good breaking ball. Righthander Malcolm Grady also offers solid upside if he can get a bit more consistent. At his best, his fastball sits around 90 mph and he mixes in a hard slider. Outfielders Dillon Nelson and Jacob Rhinesmith are coming off strong seasons at Indian Hills (Iowa) JC and have similar skill sets. Rhinesmith is toolsier, while Nelson has more polish, but both have intriguing power-speed combinations and figure to hit in the middle of the order. Catcher Colin Butkiewicz has good catch-and-throw skills, and should solidify the Hilltoppers defense behind the plate. Righthander Maddex Richardson stands out among the freshman class. He is projectable and his fastball-slider combination gives him a chance to immediately work out of the bullpen as he further develops.

Charlotte will host Wake Forest in 2 mid-week games. Looks strange that both games are listed at Charlotte as we normally do H &H with them. Wake went to a Super Regional and lost to Florida last season. WE split a H&H last year with them 1-1.

I don't have any problem with your possible USM schedule with the exception of a road guarantee Series. Unacceptable. USM fans must get away from liking these. Baseball doesn't need these.

To each their own, but going this heavily into JUCO reliance should not be what college baseball is all about. It's a cop-out strategy that non-academic schools can pursue for short-term advantage. Augmenting a roster with 1 - 3 JUCO transfers is one thing; building an entire lineup and pitching staff based on JUCO recruits is something altogther different.

I believe that LaTech is about to see the dark side of a heavy JUCO class this year. I could be wrong but I believe they lost a lot of players last year that were brought in two seasons back from a heavy JUCO class.

They are good for RPI purposes. And yeah, we could use the money. Probably get a nice payday (for baseball standards) because we're a strong program. ECU did a one and done at Ole Miss. South Alabama did a one and done at Baylor. It's called smart scheduling.

Trying to think of all the big OOC series we have played. LSU in 2007 on the road was when they were still rebuilding. We did get a return trip in 2008 but it was a single midweek game. Don't know if we were compensated for going to BR. Fullerton in 2008 and 2009 was a H/H. So is the State series in 2018 and 2019.

This is why we don't advance in sports at USM, we have been convinced that we need to play guaranteed games. Baloney. Baseball can do home and home with anyone because of their prestige in the sport. Absolutely stupidity to schedule guarantee games in baseball.

I'm saying only schedule guarantee series if teams won't come to Hattiesburg. College baseball teams fly commercial. It's very tough to get to Hattiesburg via commercial flight. Most teams fly into NOLA and drive 2 hours to get here.

We have a H/H deal with an elite program these next 2 years, so there's no reason to do a guarantee road deal right now. Just saying possibly in the future...

I am sure Scott Berry is smart enough not to do this when he can schedule otherwise. Football and Basketball are different and have no choice.

Yeah, I tend to agree with this. I never even heard of guaranteed, money games in college baseball. Football, yes, but not baseball. Teams like LSU, Arkansas and Ole Miss can attract just about anyone outside the Top 25 - 35 teams to play road games at their sites without paying compensation or offering home and home. Rice schedules home and home with the likes of Stanford, Texas, TCU, A&M and even UCF (with whom we're reciprocating for their series at Reckling 2 years ago by playing in their season-opening tourney this year), but we also schedule non-reciprocating home OOC series with the likes of SELA, Pepperdine, ECU and Gonzaga.

Guarantee baseball games are definitely a thing. Check out this scheduling board. Lot of programs either looking to host a guarantee or travel for one. Teams aren't going to travel halfway across the country for free unless they're getting a return trip.
