Pepperdine (last year) and Gonzaga (this year) are traveling to Rice non-reciprocal without compensation. Of course, in both cases, they scheduled 7 - 10 days of games vs. Texas teams. Last year, in addition to a weekend series with Rice, Pepperdine played a weekend series at either A&M or TCU (I can't remember which), along with mid-week games against UH and Sam Houston State. My guess is that Gonzaga is doing the same this year.

Western Kentucky

After a last-place finish in Conference USA this spring, Western Kentucky brought in a large crop of junior college transfers who should be able to help spur a quick turnaround. Lefthander Troy Newell was drafted this year in the 33rd round by the Rangers and provides plenty of upside for the Hilltoppers. He was sidelined for the 2016 season, but got stronger as his redshirt-sophomore season went on, running his fastball up to 92 mph to go with a good breaking ball. Righthander Malcolm Grady also offers solid upside if he can get a bit more consistent. At his best, his fastball sits around 90 mph and he mixes in a hard slider. Outfielders Dillon Nelson and Jacob Rhinesmith are coming off strong seasons at Indian Hills (Iowa) JC and have similar skill sets. Rhinesmith is toolsier, while Nelson has more polish, but both have intriguing power-speed combinations and figure to hit in the middle of the order. Catcher Colin Butkiewicz has good catch-and-throw skills, and should solidify the Hilltoppers defense behind the plate. Righthander Maddex Richardson stands out among the freshman class. He is projectable and his fastball-slider combination gives him a chance to immediately work out of the bullpen as he further develops.

To each their own, but going this heavily into JUCO reliance should not be what college baseball is all about. It's a cop-out strategy that non-academic schools can pursue for short-term advantage. Augmenting a roster with 1 - 3 JUCO transfers is one thing; building an entire lineup and pitching staff based on JUCO recruits is something altogther different.

I believe that LaTech is about to see the dark side of a heavy JUCO class this year. I could be wrong but I believe they lost a lot of players last year that were brought in two seasons back from a heavy JUCO class.

It definitely helped LaTech jump from last place in C-USA to playing in a Regional the next year. I am curious how that strategy will play out down the road. At some point you have to backfill your roster with Freshman.

At Charlotte JUCOs have been a mixed bag. We brought in 8 JUCOs and 11 Freshman in this class. That's more than we usually bring in. I see maybe 1 or 2 JUCOs jumping into the line-up this year to replace the 4 starters we lost. Mainly keeping spots warm until the Freshman develop a little more. The JC pitchers will be bullpen guys.

This coach has taken Western to depths I've never seen out of our program. I never saw us this bad under longtime Coach Murrie. Never under Finwood. And even though Myers teams weren't great they were nowhere close to this bad.

So if he needs to go juco to get us back to competitive I can live with it.

It's somewhat of a double edge sword for Tech. Tech was irrelevant for so long in baseball that going heavy JUCO to have some success may have been warranted. It has helped improve our HS recruiting because kids actually saw us make a tournament and compete for a conference title. This year will likely be a tough one for the Diamond Dogs. However, we have some nice young arms that I can see developing into weekend starters and have recently got a couple very good HS commitments. It could have been done without going heavy JUCO but that is what happened and here we are. We may have just delayed the process! If we can hang around .500 and make the conference tournament I will be pleased with the direction of the program.

SIUE beat us 2/3 in 2013! Those were some dark years.

Just put Tech's schedule in the sheet. Let me know if I made a mistake.

LaTech and FAU not playing again yet again.

Related to that, the Sun Belt scheduling guy screwed up and didn't match up South Alabama and ULL so those schools are playing a 3-game series OOC in early March.

Yep.

Virginia Tech has struggled recently but has a new coach that's supposed to be good. Ohio State was bad last year but is usually top 100. Nicholls is Nicholls. Middle of pack Southland team that will have a top 100 year every now and then.

Not an elite field, but it beats Eastern Illinois and Evansville.

Went with a few friends two years ago when we beat Mich St, Troy and Auburn I believe. Great atmosphere and venue.

Added a couple more games as Houston and Virginia Tech released their schedules. Some CUSA games for both schools.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...5ZQE2XjOmM

Virginia Tech didn't have the Cox Invitational listed on their schedule, so it's possible that they backed out at the last second. Ohio State's schedule had USM, OSU, VT, and Nicholls in the field.
