Few new 2019 offers:
2* G Ryan Langborg (California)
3* C Malcolm Wilson (South Carolina...VCU sent their entire staff to see him last week so they're going hard after him)
4* G Majok Deng (Arizona)
Also 2019 PF Daniel Ramsey, who we've been after for a looong while. He's a top-100 recruit who mentioned us 2 or 3 years ago but has blown up a bit since.

Castlin is going to Xavier. There are two new Columbia players who have announced they are transferring but neither has played as much as Castlin (both are leaving after 1 year and would have to sit out a year). Jacob Young of Texas, who we talked about earlier in this thread, is going to Rutgers.
Alabama is losing a decent player. The transfer epidemic is just insane in college basketball.

It's going to get much worse once the NCAA approves a rule permitting transferring without having to sit out. That change is going to happen very soon.

I've been internally debating whether the new GPA rule is going to help or hurt schools like Rice, Ivies, Stanford, Northwestern. With low-to-mid 3.00 GPAs hard to get at schools like Rice, will more kids opt to go to worse schools so they have the option of transferring without sitting out a year?

C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll Announced
April 06, 2017
IRVING, Texas – A total of 2,841 student-athletes have earned recognition to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll during the 2016-17 academic year, Commissioner Judy MacLeod announced today. Student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
Rice placed the highest number of student-athletes on the honor roll, producing 255 members who participate in league-sponsored sports. Marshall followed with 211, while UTSA ranked a close third with 205 conference student-athletes on the list.

I mean, just because a lot of student-athletes have 3.0+ GPAs doesn't mean reaching that threshold doesn't require a ton of work. I think we can all agree that maintaining a 3.0+ at Rice is more difficult than at any other CUSA school. I'm not sure that's controversial. All I'm doing is wondering whether the new GPA rule will impact higher ranked D1 schools.

Yeah I’m actually unconvinced that’s Rice is that much more difficult to maintain a 3.0 at than other schools.
Lots and lots of grade inflation at Rice.

Yes but our conference has community college equivalents in it. All you have to do to get into several schools in our conference is have a HS diploma.

Certain majors, I agree. But not all of them by any means. There are plenty of really smart kids at Rice who struggle mightily. I'd argue that almost every single athlete at Rice, GPA from 2.00-4.00, would get a 3.00+ at every other CUSA school (maybe a slight exaggeration).

The grade inflation must have changed since I was in school there. I once made the dean's list with a 3.67 one semester and my cumulative was under 3 but considered average for Rice at the time.

"At 3.51 in 2014, Duke’s average GPA is relatively high compared to private colleges overall but not when compared to peer institutions. According to Rojstaczer’s data, the average GPA in 2014 was 3.42 at the University of Pennsylvania, 3.46 at Dartmouth College, 3.52 at Washington University in St. Louis and 3.56 at Rice University."

I understand your point but I'm not sure why it's relevant to a discussion about GPA comparisons across D1 basketball. You're also conveniently forgetting that Rice students work harder than students at most other schools. According to an article by Business Insider (using Niche data, which I know has flaws), Rice students are the 3rd hardest working students in the country (which I can attest to considering I see it every day). Duke is 32, Penn is 29, Dartmouth 31, Wash U is 12.
I'm not saying there aren't majors that are extremely friendly to students. But as somebody who's in school right now, and who has seen both intro and 400 level classes, I can assure you that professors don't just hand out As at will.

Ok, so on a more related note, Jack Williams just committed to Rice, even though he committed to Montana like a week ago (just checked his Twitter, and yep, he decommitted from Montana after having been committed for about a week). Very confusing. Regardless, here's what I said about him a couple weeks back:
"Guy I'd keep an eye on is 6-8 Pacific grad transfer Jack Williams. California kid who we offered out of HS. Averaged 8.5 ppg and 5.9 rpg this year. Shot a really poor 39% from the field but also shot 34% from 3. Shot a remarkable 9% (!!!!) on shots around the rim. Good spot-up shooter, good pick and pop guy.
From his film, he looks like an in-betweener: a guy who kind of wants to play like a wing but doesn't really have the athleticism to beat guys. Really quirky shot but has a quick release."
He should be a good complement to QMB. Not a big that'll defend the paint but a guy who can score.
Here are his highlights from last year:

Well definitely a better player than any of our grad transfers last year so that’s promising.
