We won't win in a shootout. Our offense is good but not great. However our defense is really good, I think if we play good ball control offense we could pull out a tough one. But if UNT comes out and plays any kind of defense we could be in for a LONG night.

I would take the under on this one. Our defense is hungry for a challenge. Our offense is progressing nicely, but not quite explosive yet. We're not losing at home and we'll be sky-high and healthy.

Reading these USM slanted predictions makes me wonder if UNT should even show up.

If this turns into a high scoring affair it'll be because each team's defense/special teams gets into the scoring action (and i'm not referring to PATs or FGs). Our offense is good but I just don't see them scoring 40+ points on their own. On the flip side I don't see our defense giving up that many points and especially at home. So in saying that if it does turn into 80+ combined points I feel like there's going to be a combination of a couple pick 6s, fumble return for TD, punt/kickoff return for TD, or multiple scores set up by defense/special teams where the offense starts in the red zone.

I like it.

USM's defense is strong in every area. Offense is good, but not as good as our D is. That said our WR's are really good and NT's pass defense is ranked 104 in the nation, which is really bad. Looking for our WR's to put up some great numbers while our running game is okay but not great. NT has not faced a D as good as ours so we'll see what they are made of Saturday. That said our strength against their strength and the USM D comes out on top. USM wins pulling away late in the game as the running games gets going - 35-20.

Hard to imagine the UNT D making a dramatic improvement in one week. UNT's offense probably needs to put up 30+ points to have a chance. Not sure I see that happening against the USM D in Hattiesburg.

As it does in most games, turnovers and penalties or the lack of them will weigh greatly on the outcome. USM was able to overcome 125 yards in penalties, a turnover, 7 dropped passes, and three more that hit the hands while stretched out that were tough but catchable passes over a competitive ULM team at their place. NT is better though.

Not to mention our D dropped 5 int.'s that hit them right in the hands.

Our old and storied programs will once again face each other this Saturday. I thought it would be fun to look back at our first games...

North Texas was obviously cheated out of an impressive first win, falling by a rumored score of 40-0 in 1913, when they traveled into enemy territory to face Texas Christian University and their hired refs.

Southern Miss fared a little better in their first game ever back in 1912. Using their home field advantage and mostly likely a great size advantage, they managed to fend off the local Hattiesberg Scouts Troop by a score of 30-0.

It was a tough game against the Boy Scouts at Kamper park Baseball Field, but our closer came out of the bullpen to shut the scouts down.
