Big Ten Rivalries
What are all the rivalries in the Big Ten? How many are for all sports and how many are for a single sport? Big or small, one-sided or not, I am just looking for some history of the conference. 04-cheers

This would be a good start.

Believe it or not, those "trophies" mean something.

Cannon Wars -- Rutgers and Princeton

While not an inconference rivalry, the cannon wars between Rutgers and Princeton has been going on for over 100 years.

Despite having a trophy, Penn State-Minnesota isn't a rivalry. The same can be said about Penn State-Michigan State for the most part. That's why a list like that isn't great and it doesn't show how many times they've played.

That list isn't meant as the be all, end all, rather a place to start with some examples. BR has a pretty good list of inter-conference rivalries.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/16312...in-the-b1g

Several teams have pretty good rivalries with Notre Dame like Michigan, Michigan State, and Purdue. One of the unfortunate side effects of the CFP and realignment is that many of those games are only played every few years.

RE: Big Ten Rivalries
When they were discussing divisional alignment after inviting Rutgers, someone at mgoblue submitted this and I thought it was a good reflection at the time for football. Basically, the black lines were rivalries that are huge for a school. The blue ones are ones that were important to play and will be missed when not played. The green ones were ones were trophies exist and/or there is some rivalry aspects and which would be good to play every year, but are not necessary.

Nebraska, Maryland, and Rutgers have slowly been integrated since then. I would draw a green line between Nebraska and Wisconsin and probably Rutgers and Maryland.

From a personal standpoint with football, I love the Illinois game as it is our only trophy game and once (long ago) was even a season ending game. We played them every year until the conference expanded to 11. The Wisconsin game has been the one that has probably had me most nervous over the years. The Penn State game is probably the closest one to a 2nd rivalry though due to proximity, divisional alignment, etc

Now if we my personal order for Ohio State rivalries are the following for basketball:
1. Michigan (regardless of sport they are big).
2. Wisconsin (not sure how Ohio State fans would rank on the whole, but I got into it the sport with them seeming to always be a big game).

That's a great chart!

I would put at least a green line between PSU and Michigan. They've been a thorn in Penn State's side for a long time. Iowa gets a green line too as they ruined a perfect season and a possible national championship in 2008 and nearly did it this year. I'm starting to hate Iowa.

I wish Penn State and Nebraska were playing more often. That was supposed to be a cross division set rivalry back with Leaders-Legends if my memory serves me.

RE: Big Ten Rivalries
It was. Legends and Leaders had its strengths even in its weaknesses.

Legends-Leaders
Michigan-Ohio State
Nebraska-Penn State
Iowa-Purdue
Michigan State-Indiana
Minnesota-Wisconsin
Northwestern-Illinois

Strengths:
1. Fairly balanced really. Top of Leaders was probably a bit higher when you consider Penn State advantages over Nebraska and Wisconsin, but not by much. The Legends was deeper in strength.
2. Gave us some good top match-ups annually. Encouraged rivalries between some teams where there is less reason to see one now (example: Michigan vs. Nebraska who would have been divisional rivals).

Weaknesses:
1. The names. Not only do the divisions feel somewhat random, but you had two divisional names that started with the letter L. Asking any outsider to remember who was in what division was difficult to say the least and I like what we called them on another board, "The Where is Wisconsin Division" and the "Why is Wisconsin Here Division."
2. The divisions were set-up with the idea of moving up Ohio State/Michigan up a bit on the schedule and then allowing them to play each other in the championship some years. I suspect we would have seen Ohio State/Penn State and Michigan/Michigan State as season ending if they would gone through with that (although they might have simply rotated some). Regardless, the fans revolted and that meant keeping the "The Game" as season ending which meant one of the more compelling possible championship games would be an immediate rematch possibility.
3. Wisconsin was separated from absolutely everyone nearby. Minnesota was only preserved with the locked crossover. Iowa was locked. Nebraska, a promising new rival for them, was separated.

I actually disagree on that, because even though Penn State hasn’t really embraced it as a rivalry (Penn St vs Mich St), Mich State fans really look forward to this game after Michigan, of course. It’s kinda like Arkansas-LSU to me.

RE: Big Ten Rivalries
As a buckeye fan of course I cherish Ohio State-Michigan game every year. I also love when the Buckeyes and Penn State play, that game means a lot to both teams. Also, I really see Maryland upping their game, I believe they will be a player in the east soon. Terps and Nittany Lions could become great in future years.

West- Man, just a bunch if old school football programs, run, power football. Love Iowa-Nebraska, Nebraska-Wisconsin, Iowa-wisconsin, Nebraska-northwestern, Minnesota-iowa etc... Lots of great matchups in the West. Some are long rivals and others are growing into such.

Doubt it, Rutgers fans are out for blood when they face State Penn. They are the new (1990s) Syracuse for us, the fans are douchebags and delusional (not about the quality of their team but of their own past), and they have been stealing our state's top talents (until the day when Schiano started taking over both NJ and NY in the 2000s). Maryland has been like UConn for us, mired in the same mediocrity and occasionally rising above us but usually not in the end. Ohio State is our new West Virginia, a rival without the hatred, and hopefully we can eventually have epic showdowns with them.

As a Spartan I think it is fair to say that every Spartan wants our arch rival and little sister Michigan to lose every game in every sport for eternity. Sparty also has a long standing great respectful rivalry with Notre Dame. I think of the Buckeyes as a lesser rivalry and brother's in hatred of all things wolverine.

On the basketball front i think that Wisconsin and Indiana are rivals. I think Michigan State also considers blue bloods Duke, North Carolina and Kentucky to be rivals that we would someday like to be regularly competitive with.

Go State!
Beat Michigan!

Basketball rivals are tougher. Michigan is a rival in every sport. Indiana would have been answered for years. A lot would say Michigan State. To me personally, I think of Wisconsin as huge as they were very good when I was getting into things and a big competitor. Because of geography/histort, i think Michigan State and Indiana probably get claim to being next biggest after Michigan.

Fox Cat fans Illinois and WIsky are the 2 most fiercest for football with Iowa moving up fast. It was the Iowa beating NU mercilessly when Hayden Fry was HC that riled up Cat fans and now I cherish every win over the Hawkeyes as much a win over the Illinois or Badgers. [/php]

Yeah well, we had our chance and blew it a couple years ago... destroying Hackenberg all day and then letting him come back on us was embarrassing.

Can a Michigan State fan fact-check this? I don't follow their rivals but I always thought that it was Michigan first, then it was Wisconsin, Ohio State, or others excluding non-conference rivals such as Notre Dame.

This would be a good start.

Believe it or not, those "trophies" mean something.

Despite having a trophy, Penn State-Minnesota isn't a rivalry. The same can be said about Penn State-Michigan State for the most part. That's why a list like that isn't great and it doesn't show how many times they've played.

I actually disagree on that, because even though Penn State hasn’t really embraced it as a rivalry (Penn St vs Mich St), Mich State fans really look forward to this game after Michigan, of course. It’s kinda like Arkansas-LSU to me.

Can a Michigan State fan fact-check this? I don't follow their rivals but I always thought that it was Michigan first, then it was Wisconsin, Ohio State, or others excluding non-conference rivals such as Notre Dame.

From my point of view the Penn State game is not all that. Yes it is important, but i don't think of them as some great rival.
