US Men's National Team eliminated from 2018 World Cup contention
Shocked and livid after this one. The US lost to Trinidad & Tobago tonight, 2-1, and were eliminated from Russia 2018. It is the first time we have failed to qualify for the WC since 1986.

Coming into tonight, the US had a 93 % chance of getting in. A win or draw would have done the trick, or a loss by Honduras or Panama. But all the results went against us, and we're done.

Bruce Arena was an awful hire. I felt that way the moment he was hired. He's a gutless coach and his teams always reflect this.

Time to completely re-tool. It sucks for Tim Howard, who has now played in his last World Cup. It sucks even more for 19-year old phenom Christian Pulisic, whose talent we are wasting, and will continue to waste if we don't get our act together in the next 4 years.

Meh, I think that's a weak position to have. Our ceiling has proven to be high. In 2010 we won our group, which included England, the inventor of the damn sport. In 2014, we made it out of the Group of Death that included powerhouses Germany and Portugal. We beat Spain in 2013 when they were # 1 in the world.

We CAN be great on the world stage, but much better decisions need to be made at the top to get us there.

What have we won? My position is backed by years and years of really winning nothing on the world stage. It's pretty strong when the evidence backs it.

If your unrealistic standard is winning the whole thing over the European and South American powerhouses who put soccer over everything and spend hundreds of millions dollars on developing 15-19 year olds, then yeah, I can see why you say we "stink".

But that's not the actual standard for whether a program "stinks" or not. Only 8 different countries have won the World Cup: Brazil (5), Germany (4), Italy (4), Argentina (2), Uruguay (2), England (1), Spain (1), France (1). If you say we "stink" because we're not in that group, that's pretty unfair.

We made the Round of 8 in 2002. We reached the knockout phase (final 16) in 2010 and 2014. Those are solid results for a nation that puts soccer 4th or 5th.

Our best athletes don't play soccer. Not even close. They do in Brazil, Italy, Argentina, England, Uruguay, Spain and France. So while there's no excuse for us to miss the WC entirely out of our region, I'd say we've proven to be a valuable member of the international soccer community over the last 15 years.

I get the reasoning 08, same reasoning applies in reverse for sports like hoops. No matter the excuse, we just are not very good.

Panama qualified for the first time. Out of the 35 teams in CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean), 25 are Caribbean islands. 10 of the 35 have played in a World and Panama will make 11.
