It may be that I was just burnt on coaches after watching Dantonio and Kelly leave, but I didn't shed a tear when Jones left. In fact, the way his Coaching transition happened, with the Colorado flight-tracking mess, I was RELIEVED when Tennessee announced they were hiring him.
He is a classic "used car salesman" coach. He's got a zillion slogans. We still laugh at "Hold the rope!" which is close enough to "Don't drop the soap!" to evoke laughs. In the end, at UC, he betrayed those slogans by jumping ship at the first opportunity. Which is fine because Coaches are just employees.
But I'd be careful... He may have sold monorails to North Haverbook and Brockway, but it's just a sales pitch.

Agree Jerry on the fact he was playing the field and tiring of the constant rumors (and photos) of where he was interviewing for the next head coaching job. IIRC, former AD Whit Babcock put him on notice to come clean with his intentions because it was dragging everyone along far too long. I was ready for him to go at that point. Doesn't change the fact that I still miss the winning ways under his last 2 years at UC after going through Cadaverville's rot...

This is pretty scathing. Jones was at the cross roads of his career. I was beyond pissed, but in hindsight, he had to go. Uc was about to take a serious step backwards eventhough he had won league titles every year but one. We were going from p5 to g5. Jones was going to take any p5 job available, and he panicked. I remember feeling relief about the Fluberville hire. It made me believe of our legitimacy even with the cards dealt.

Eh... Like I said, he's an employee and he does need to take care of his career. But in his three years here, what did he sell? "Represent the 'C'." "Hold the rope!" All stuff about integrity and keeping the faith. But when it came to himself, he leveraged the best deal that he could and got out of town.
My point is that the words coming out of his mouth do not apply to himself. If that's scathing, so be it. I get leaving UC for Tennessee, but it did make all those slogans rather...empty.
I just think it would have to be impossible to follow what Brian Kelly did.
Kelly was such an amazing game day coach when he was at UC. When USF had Leavitt back then, it was so obvious that we were getting completely out coached, it was embarrassing.

Eh, you are missing my point. The situation was extraordinary. There is not a coach that would have acted differently no matter what slogan they used. Even the few that have stayed at a g5 job for an extra year or two would not have absorbed the consequences forced on Jones. So yea, scathing in light of the situation.
