If Cincy is surprising people this season (in a not-sucky way) then said people have no friggin' clue what they are talking about.

The Seth LeDay deal is BS. From all accounts he the best player on the team and could help our front court tremendously. We're 2.5 weeks from playing a game and the kid doesn't even know yet if he'll be able to play this year or not.
NCAA is so full of s(%^.

Memphis is already picked to finish 9th. How can we disappoint from there, lol? A team to disappoint is usually one predicted at a certain level, that misses badly.
Sometimes I think journalists don't really understand the words they use.

I was surprised by his dour prediction. I think the AAC will likely place four teams in the NCAA Tourney.

I agree. I think SMU is a team that could disappoint this year. Unless he's talking relative to general expectations of a program, Memphis is probably not a team that will disappoint this year.
I think something similar can be said of Gregory at USF. There isn't exactly a ton of pressure in the early stages of a rebuild. I think Tubby has a tough coaching job. He's in a place with high expectations that wants it done a way he doesn't usually do it. And now.

Memphis is a resource rich program (eg, play in NBA arena, State-of-the-art practice facility, pays coach about $3M a year) with strong fan support and local media attention, and fertile local recruiting. It should not be tough to do better than 9th place projected by most objective media sources. It should not be tough to reach the NCAA Tourney by year three of Tubby’s tenure (every coach lasting 3 years did it since Bartow hired in 1970).

I took that as there are 2 teams that are basically guaranteed to make it. He then lists out a handful of teams that have the capability to but really could go either way.
I don't think that's too far off.

Ya. It's like the BubbleWatch thing ESPN does every March. They won't officially "Lock" someone until it's 100%.
They probably figure...
LOCKS: Cincy, WSU
LIKELY IN: SMU, UCF
WORK LEFT TO DO: Temple, Houston, UCONN

True story. We've won at least 1 tournament game in 20 of our last 22 appearances.

I do not necessarily disagree. But I think he has a tougher job than Gregory. As you state, expectations are high. From the outside, sometimes unreasonably so. Not so much that you expect success, but how you expect it to happen.

Continue to invest in the program, continue to put butts in seats and things will turn around. Sometimes it takes a little while but you are doing everything you can. This is what we did to pull our program out of the deep abyss it fell into because of NCAA sanctions and back-to-back poor coaching hires. It took 3 horrible events (4 if you count killing football - 5 if you count the MVC's transition from a power into a mid-major league over the 90's) to knock Wichita State basketball off the national radar and into the dumps. It took over a decade to pull our asses out. To be fair we really weren't investing in the program much during the 90's which undoubtedly lengthened our stay. We had accumulated much debt from football and the entire fanbase was just in shock. We still came out to the games though. I doubt it will take Memphis long at all to get back into the top 25 barring a major catastrophe.

Bartow did it b/c Iba left him Finch and Robinson, and we rented Kenon for one year.
Kirk did it b/c he cheated his butt off. Same with Calipari. Rudd has decreed we don't cheat, which was great timing in light of the FBI investigations, and we hired Tubby expressly for that reason.
Yates and Finch did well for awhile, but eventually got fired. Same with Pastner.
I honestly believe Pastner left us in worse shape than anybody before. So I think it's reasonable to expect it will take longer to recover this time, coupled with the no cheating edict. JMO.
