Expansion of College Football Playoffs
I would be satisfied with an expansion to 6; however this one is intriging

Scott Lambrecht‏ @scottlambrecht 11/18/2016
This might be the more realistic playoff expansion. 12 teams. 8 home games for top 8 seeds. 2 week break after Championship weekend, 2 week break after that. Still done in first half of January. College football belongs on Saturdays! Bowls still have plenty of teams.

small problem for the semifinals and finals. That little thing known as the NFL. Good luck getting them to back off of playoff games on Saturdays in January. It's simply DOA.

Eight is plenty. Make the regular season important by making the P5 champs AQ. The top G5 champ is AQ as well. The remaining 2 wildcard slots would be available for top ranked non-conference champs (this would include independents). It wouldnt require much at all to make the change. By playing th e first round the week after Championship Saturday on the home field of the higher ranked opponent--there are no real conflicts. After the first round, you are left with 4 teams and they simply drop into the existing 4-team model. So, basically, the new fist round would simply "snap" on to the existing CFP structure.

They need to beat Menphis first. They are only #14. Top 12 is attainable, though.

Or Memphis...I was making the point that the top Group of 5 representative needs to be included.

South of UNF, north of USF and east of UWF but that's not important right now.

Not that I'm necessarily in favor of expanding beyond 4, but if you're going to 12, you might as well go to 16, since it takes the same number of rounds. In any case, there would need to be reseeding after each round rather than a rigid bracket structure.

Sure, the rankings are rather arbitrary, but if they can't make the top 12....

I agree with 6. To make it simple, five P5 champions and the highest ranked team of G5/Independent participate in the playoff. Alabama will be out this year. Top 2 seeds have bye. No. 3 vs No. 6 and No. 4 vs No. 5 match-up use two minor bowls one week before New York Day.

no chance it goes only to 6. Face it, with 5 power conferences, there will NEVER be a champions only format. NEVER.

The playoffs will not change to add more teams.
What we will see is a contraction of conferences to 4 and have a champions only playoff.

Why not make it 64? Nice even number. If you can't make the top 64...

Yeah....
Not happening since ND would have to join the ACC in football.

This is the plan you want:

http://greglange.blogspot.com/2013/04/my...-plan.html

16 team playoffs. Conference champions automatically included. Postseason for every team that doesn't make the playoffs. All but two teams play 14 games or less. All but 4 teams play 13 games or less. More meaningful games. End of year conference versus conference action. Gets rid of bowl games and replaces that with something better.

I don't think the G5 should get an autobid unless they are ranked high enough to deserve it. Playoff goes to 8 highest ranked teams. What I do have a problem with is the current way the teams are ranked. Bring the computers back into the mix to offset some of the P5 homerism. Balance and unbiased rankings are what's needed.

I'd like 6 or 8. I could live with 12. 12 would be great for tv:

2nd weekend in Dec 4 opening round games
3rd weekend in Dec 4 quarter-final games
New Years Day 2 semi-final games
Early Jan Final

You're 100% right.

The powers that be are tone deaf and will kill the golden goose trying to over-extract income. G5 football will die for 90 percent of the schools. Top programs will do great under the new split right until the whole thing collapses. It is corporate America's gift to college sports.

I'm not even bitter about the coming split because everyone is screwed. The system as it stands has declining in game attendance and a number of serious threats to its stability.

The worst thing for the playoffs from a fans perspective is to have the same 4 or 6 teams make the playoffs every year.
