SMU Men's Soccer Hangs On for a 1-0 Victory Over Cal in NCAA Second Round Action
DALLAS (SMU) - The seventh-seed SMU men's soccer team fought off nasty weather conditions, deteriorating field conditions and the Cal Bears Tuesday evening in the second round of the 2004 NCAA men's soccer tournament, and came out victorious with the final score reading 1-0. With the win, SMU improves to 16-3-1 and advances to the NCAA third round while Cal closes out its season with a mark of 13-4-3.
With threatening skies overhead, both teams went on the offensive attack right from the opening whistle. SMU's David Chun tallied the game's lone goal at the 5:56 mark when he tapped in a rebounded ball close to the front of the goal. Chun got a foot in the face while shooting and ended up with a bloody nose. Heavy rain continued to pelt the field as each team continued its offensive push. SMU's defense was solid, thwarting off numerous Bear attacks. As the game went on, the skies opened and more rain fell, creating puddles on the field, but each team did its best to not let the weather get in the way of its game strategy.
As the game was winding down, Cal gave SMU everything it had and came within inches of tying the game in the waning seconds, with a corner kick that was headed onto the Mustang crossbar and over the net.
"We had a lot of opportunities in front of the goal and it just didn't seem to go our way," said Cal head coach Kevin Grimes. "SMU's goalkeeper made some great saves and their defense was outstanding. That was the real difference in the game. They got that early goal and did a good job of holding down the fort and not allowing anything to get past the goal line."
"The goal that David scored was not only right place- right time, but a real act of courage," states SMU head coach Schellas Hyndman. "Not for one second did he hesitate. That goal was all David - his heart, his character."
SMU's next opponent will be Tulsa, who tied 10th-seed Penn State, 1-1, but advanced on a 4-3 edge in the penalty kick phase. SMU has defeated Tulsa twice this season, including a 2-1 victory on Nov. 14 to capture the MVC Conference Tournament title. The match-up is slated for Saturday, Nov. 27, at Westcott Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. =
