Once Duke, UNC, NC State and Louisville all get hit by the FBI, I guess the new order of ACC basketball will have UVA, VT, Clemson and (once they get their scholarships back) Syracuse?

Thank goodness that SU wasnt listed on that report. They're the only school who won a championship this century who wasnt on the list. They were already punished for a professor doing a paper for Fab Melo and several players being paid for doing work at the Boys and girls club because the manager of the facility was a SU booster (neither one of the players received more than $300 and were paid by check). That all seems minor league compared to what other schools have been doing. I see some of the stuff that these other schools are doing and wonder how SU was so severely punished for such minor offenses.

I just hope that SU remains off of that list.

That is why Syracuse only got minor punishment and got to keep their only championship. But rules are rules. No pay for the players. Even just $300.

If this is "minor" I'd like to know what major is?

Here is a complete list of the penalties the NCAA handed down:

1. Jim Boeheim suspended for nine ACC games in the 2015-16 season.

2. The vacation of 108 of Boeheim's coaching victories, dropping him down to sixth on the all-time wins list in Division I.

3. A reduction of 12 scholarships over four years.

4. Fine of $500 per contest played by ineligible students.

5. Syracuse must return to the NCAA all funds it has received to date through the former Big East Conference revenue sharing for its appearances in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. This could cost the school more than $1 million.

6. Reduction in the number of permissible off-campus recruiters from four to two during June 1, 2015 through May 31, 2017.

7. Men's basketball and football programs placed on five-year probation from March 6, 2015 through March 5, 2020.

Syracuse's self-imposed penalties
1. A one-year postseason ban for men's basketball in the 2014-15 season.

2. A voluntary, two-year term of probation for the athletic department.

3. Elimination of one scholarship for men's basketball for the 2015-2016 season.

4. Elimination of a men's basketball off-campus recruiter for six months during 2015-2016.

5. Vacation of 24 men's basketball wins: (15 in 2004-05 and nine in 2011-12).

6. Vacation of 11 football wins: (six in 2004-05; one in 2005-06; four in 2006-07).

I believe that players are allowed to have part time jobs. That is what they thought they were doing, working part time jobs.

SU actually won 2 more back in the 1920's and 1930's. We get to keep all 3 of them, although 2 of them are Helms Championships. Its interesting that the NCAA doesnt recognize the Helms basketball championships in the 20's and 30's, but they recognize fb championships from the 1920's and 1930's. But that does go to show SU's longevity in basketball. Its about to be 50 straight years with a winning record.

How anyone would call that minor punishment is beyond me.

In the case of Smith Jr. this appears to be when he was in high school and the agency didn't even get his business. Perhaps he got more money after he started at State who knows? He probably got more money from other agents as well. His father was bringing in big shoe company money coaching AAU when he was in high school.

If he was getting money under the table directly or indirectly from the shoe companies how is this a violation for whatever college he ends up at? That is unless they are involved? It isn't like we are talking about boosters here. I understand that, but secret "loans" before he is even enrolled?

As far as the Chapel Hill and Duke players the argument that it was just $100 is silly. The parents meeting the runner for lunch wasn't to discuss the weather. They were meeting to negotiate money terms. They might not have ended up working together but lets not be naive. Some agency paid somebody in the family. But again this is shoe money flowing into players and their families hands, not boosters or the school itself.

I doubt there are any major conference schools that don't have players that have gotten money.

UPDATE to the UPDATE:
Duke, Michigan State and Kentucky are the three most visible programs that have had their program connected ...to potential NCAA violations involving ex-NBA agent Andy Miller and a former employee, Christian Dawkins.

...All three programs have denied wrongdoing.

“Duke immediately reviewed the matter and, based on the available information, determined there are no eligibility issues related to today’s report,” read a statement released by Duke AD Kevin White.

Syracuse penalties were definitely over the top. As for the players earning their money, how long was Manzels suspension for selling his autograph? How many wins did A&M have to vacate? No wins forfeited & a 1/2 game suspension IIRC.

Vanderbilt made the list? Gee, what was Stallings comment again to a UK fan at a Louisville game?

RECOGNIZE!

The Hokies are a DANGEROUS tournament team:

Unfortunately, they are also inconsistent at times (nod to UVA for that point).

Interesting wording in White's statement. According to Carter's mother (who was referenced in the ledger) her husband (Wendell, Sr.) left the restaurant immediately because he didn't like the agent, and she did not eat anything at the meeting which she left shortly after after learning what it was about. So there would be no eligibility issues related to that report.

If there were any potential eligibility issues that weren't mentioned in that ledger, White didn't say. And why would he?

With Tech's win against Duke and Miami's win against Carolina, I think we could now have a four way tie for second in the ACC at 12-6. I'd hate to have to figure out the tie breakers to see who would get the last double bye if that happens.

If I'm reading the rules correctly, UNC would get the second seed by virtue of its 4-1 combined record against the other three. State would be #3, because they went 2-1 against Clemson and Duke. And Duke would get the last double bye because they beat Clemson head to head.

If Duke beats UNC, the Heels would have 7 losses. Then, a Clemson loss would also knock the Tigers out of the double bye. If Clemson and State both win out, Carolina is knocked out. If Clemson wins and State loses one, it gets dicey, because I think other teams could still finish with 7 losses. So I can't tell what tie breaker would be in effect.

I guess we could just wait until Sunday when the league will sort it out for us.

There's a website that does all the work for you. Just enter your choices for the outcomes of the upcoming games and it works out the seedings and brackets for you.

Exactly ... the lesson here is clear: James Forrest was a beast and deserves more historical recognition. He outscored Travis Best and Malcolm Mackey that year.

I'm not sure about Syracuse, but I think about 7 of 9 advance. I'd take that.
