RE: 2018: Football recruiting updates before National Signing Day on 2/7
And back to the original subject.......... USM had a commit flip from Ole Miss to us over the weekend.

Meridian defensive end Deuntra Hyman (6-5, 230), an Ole Miss commitment since May 2017, flipped to the Golden Eagles after taking an official visit to Hattiesburg.

247sports.com lists Hyman as the No. 11 in-state prospect for the class of 2018. Rivals.com lists the Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen member as the No. 6 recruit in Mississippi.

Hyman was originally set to visit Ole Miss this week, but he cancelled on the Rebels following his pledge to the Golden Eagles, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/story...073042001/

and to finish up the recruiting class:

The Golden Eagles have announced 16 signings already and four more players put on scholarship last year (Allen Fails, T-Rod Daniels, Bubba Fludd and Andrew Cole) must count toward this year’s group.

Freeport (Florida) defensive lineman Shannon Carswell, who committed to Southern Miss in August, indicated Sunday he might be rethinking things.

The Golden Eagles are expected to sign Carswell, Jefferson Davis County defensive back Malik Shorts, Iowa Western safety Ky’el Hemby and Woodlawn-Shreveport running back Trivenskey Mosley. Shaw (Georgia) long snapper T.J. Harvey signed with Southern Miss in December, but the school has not made a corresponding official announcement.

If Harvey is eventually announced and Hyman indeed signs, the Golden Eagles will have reached the 25-signee limit for 2018.

3-star DE Steven Shaw headed to Conference USA
Louisiana Tech hit the Lone Star State again Monday to land a 3-star defensive end commitment from a Houston-area power.
Gabe Brooks - 3 hours ago 0
6'4" 240 DE

"(Defensive line) coach (Rick) Petri is a really good coach and I fit the defensive scheme well. Louisiana Tech is a very respected program when it comes to the NFL."

Shaw picked Louisiana Tech over a hand full of other finalists that included Connecticut, North Texas, ULL, and UNLV.

La Tech is definitely putting together a really nice class. I'm impressed. I really think the future is bright for C-USA football.

I agree, Fish. I think this will be C-USA 3.0's best recruiting classes overall yet.

We (CUSA) now have to get these commitments to sign on the dotted line next week

Yep. There's always the threat of a last minute offer from a P5 program, or a simple change of heart by the athlete to worry about.

Rivals shows this kid has 8 offers (2 P5) and 247 shows 15 offers (7 P5). Until recent, he was P5 commit. Does Rivals just not put much effort into 3* or below players and keeping their data accurate? Looks that way.

If they follow through and sign + qualify, sure is shaping up that way.

Looking at the other G5 conferences, we look better than all but AAC (and that is close).

Billy with no stars could end up winning the Heisman while that 3 Star WR you had a hard on for could be nothing.

I’m fully confident in Doc & Co. ability to recruit solid players at Marshall & other than a fluke season a couple years ago the proof is on the field. Look forward to another great season.

This is sooooo true. Take a look at last spring for Marshall, we had 2 Gants on the team, Kendall (RS Sr) Malik (RS Soph).

Kendall was a high rated 4 star one time 5 star committed to UGA. Malik was a no star walk on at Marshall from DC (Same HS that produced Byron Leftwich). Kendall really never lived up to the hype he was at safety and Malik passed him on the depth chart. The next day Kendall left the Marshall program.

Marshall did pick up 6 commitments in the last few days:

Lawrence Papillon RB, Miami FL
Patrick Keenan DE/TE, Tampa FL
Bakari Jackson LB, Fort Myers FL
Sharrod Frazier LB, Brunswick GA
John Jiles S, Wake Forest NC
Tarlik Keaton WR, Sarasota FL

But I don't trust or put any stock in these players until they actually arrive on campus. We've had our share flip to other schools on signing day or never show up on campus.

The new Rice staff has been very busy as we're now up to 11 commitments (in addition to the 6 who signed officially in December). Most are 2 star recruits (3 are 3 stars) but I think there are some real diamonds in the rough in there, including LB Antonio Montero of Eden Prairie, MN (Minnesota player of the year).

I don’t know for sure... My initial thought was that it was a qualification issue because after he decommitted from Rice in early December, the only offers he was getting were from JuCos.

But him committing to UNT would suggest that he hit NCAA minimums at the very least.

Just read that he committed to UNT as a PWO and didn’t have any offers.

Maybe Bloomgren told him to look elsewhere when he got the job?

I really have no idea.

The Center from Tulane should have the most immediate effect. if there is a group that was affected the most by graduation it's the OL.
