Yes the bowl game will be there.

We have no clue how many events because they have not put out RFPs at this point. After construction is under way they will start soliciting events.

New mayor throws his support behind the project, proposed the city contribute $3 million a year for 30 years
City Council unanimously approved adding the issue to Feb 6th agenda
The BJCC Authority is committing $10.7 million to the annual debt service on the project.
Jefferson County has committed $1 million a year for 30 years.
UAB has committed $4 million a year for 10 years through a lease agreement, sponsorship and naming rights.

This is huge for UAB and the City. Not only a new stadium but the BJCC will receive a complete renovation.

Where do high schools play the state championship games in Alabama?

Football: Auburn and Tuscaloosa on rotating basis. This could allow us to get in rotation or be permanent site.

Exclamation RE: New Stadium in Downtown Birmingham Takes a Another Step Forward
New Downtown Stadium takes another step towards reality.

http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/index....river_home

The Birmingham City Council passed a resolution of intent to provide $90 million for the project.

All that's left now is for the State Legislature to activate a car rental tax approved in 2001 for a new stadium (yes it has been that long).

City of Birmingham - $90 million ($30 million/year, 10 years)
Jefferson County - $30 million ($1 million/year, 30 years)
UAB - $40 million ($4 million/year, 10 years*) + 20 year lease
BJCC Board - $321 million (10.7 million per year/ 30 years)

State - $105 million - $3.5 million (est)/ year - activation of 3% car rental tax

Total: $586 million over 30 years ($481 million currently tentatively approved)

*10-year naming rights and sponsorship opportunities

Currently no one. It is where the men's basketball tournament was the last three years. It was UAB's home court through the 1987-88 and has hosted Pro Ice Hockey and Indoor Football teams in the past.

BJCC = Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex (formerly Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center)

The BJCC also encompasses the adjacent Uptown entertainment district.

In this image, the Arena is the large building in the upper right of the complex. The stadium will be located on the parking lot block plus the grassy block in the lower left corner. The entertainment district is not shown in this picture, but is directy across the street above the stadium site and will be expanded to connect to the stadium site.

This picture shows the new Westin Hotel and the Uptown entertainment district. The grassy area is the corner of the stadium/expanded district footprint.

Oh...and for some reason the city is also proceeding with renovations to Legion Field. To what degree remains to be seen.

What’s the plan for Legion Field? I have to admit I partially agree with the city council member who said it needed to be demolished. I don’t know what I would replace it with though. As for putting another stadium there, uhh, I don’t know. I like the BJCC stadium plan much better. Any ideas for the Legion Field space??

Happy for uab, but that's an insane expense for a city in poor financial shape, especially with no professional tenant.

Except the city isn't in poor financial shape. In fact, the city saw a big revenue increase that led to the largest annual budget ever at around $460M this year.

Jefferson County (that Birmingham is in) filed for bankruptcy 5 years ago, but is a separate government entity. That may be what you're thinking of. Even the county seems to be doing much better now though.
