So, for a two-way tie, it goes head to head then to record against the rest of the conference going from the top to the bottom (I think). Assuming UTEP loses out and assuming Rice beats UTEP March 1 and loses to everyone else, we'd both be at 3-15. UTEP's 2 non-Rice victories this year are over FIU and Charlotte. Rice's 2 non-UTEP victories would be over FIU and Charlotte. What would be the next tiebreaker?

Never mind. I think I figured it out. In the above scenario, Rice would have to lose to FIU. That would mean UTEP would be 1-0 against FIU and Rice 1-1. Unfortunately, that would break the tie in UTEP's favor.

I’m going to claim to be a tiebreaking expert. Here’s the kicker on the tiebreaker this year. 0-1 is better than 0-2. It says so in the tiebreaker rules.

So... let’s say the standings stay as they are and Rice and UTEP both stumble their way down the stretch with Rice’s only win at home vs the Miners. At 3-15, LATech is the highest seeded team that Rice and UTEP have a different record against. And Rice would only be 0-1 against them while UTEP could be 0-2.

Tiebreaker at 3-15 goes to Rice. (Unless FAU or FIU catch or pass LATech).
At 4-14 its even more complicated but in that scenario a UTSA win could elevate Rice, or a LATech or USM win could elevate UTEP.

It’s Complicated, and silly. Much like the brand of basketball our two teams play.

Mucho style points to UTEP this week for a stellar 1-1 week all while losing a game by 49.

Could have sworn it was the other way around (0-1 was not better than 0-2). Thanks for the good news then.

I'm pulling for Rice to make the C-USA tourney so UTEP can get on with the business of hiring a new coach. That will be the final big piece in replacing the old regime. New AD who is very good imho, new FB coach who has to prove himself and a new MBB coach who will have to do the same. Way too much losing has been going on at UTEP.

Can we self-impose a postseason ban? Not because we're in trouble now, but more like as a credit that can be applied towards any future potential postseason bans.

Awright! This schniznitt just got REAL yo!

Rice (last month, to FAU): nobody comes in OUR house and gets an easy win. Game winner at :03 left...
FAU (three seconds later) You left too much time on the clock, yo, FAU FTW..
Fast forward to last night at FAU..
Rice led double digits most of the night before FAU closed on a 13-0 or something run and took it to OT. Tied it up again after we fouled with couple seconds left but then AKO banked in the game winner at the buzzer. Rice responds!!!

An hour or so later... UTEP comes out of nowhere to toss their hat back in the ring with a last minute game winner vs LATech.

Weird, all of a sudden these guys are playing like they WANT it.
USM and FIU are safely in (not clinched but safe) at 6 wins
FAU 5-10 looked good a week ago but may need one more win to qualify
UTEP 4-11 Now has a tiebreaker inside track as long as LATech (7 wins) stays ahead of the rest of the sub-500 crowd.
Rice 3-12 still looking up at UTEP and hosts them next week, but realistically has to get another win for 5 to even have a chance.
Charlotte 1-14. Sorry Charli. We just did the math and you are officially done. The ONLY scenario where you could get in a tie for 12th is a 3-way tie with Rice and UTEP. And you are 0-2 against that pair.

So the last two tickets are basically down to Rice, UTEP, and, yes, FAU.

Tomorrow: FAU hosts UNT, UTEP hosts USM, and Rice is at FIU.

Ako's buzzer beater (did he call bank?). Rice will now need 2 wins at least to make the conference tournament.

Wow. Rice loses 11 point lead and the game by 3. FAU runs away from UNT. Congratulations FAU you ( and everyone else at 6+ wins) clinches the Frisco trip.

UTEP and Rice for the last ticket... advantage Miners

And UTEP beats Southern Miss tonight.

If Rice beats both UTEP & UTSA next week and UTEP also loses to North Texas, Rice would have the tiebreaker with the better record vs. UTSA.

No problem, all three of those games we just need the home team to win. There could be multiple Owls roosting in Frisco yet.
