I know there are Elite Level Coaches that might have an interest in the Louisville position, I know some have been promoting former Cardinal Kenny Payne and current UK assistant Coach as a Pitino replacement. However David Padgett is the current HC at Louisville and was placed in an unbelievable situation just as season was starting. He has shown level headed thinking and shown great improvement as season progresses. I honestly believe He is the right Man for the job permanently. He has respect from His players, coaches and Fans. I cast My lot with keeping David Padgett as Louisville Head Coach going forward. Hope others feel the same way.

Really? You honestly don't know why he was fired?

OK ... let's give him the benefit of the doubt. Pitino knew NOTHING about EITHER scandal. His assistants acted on their own in both instances.

Based on this assumption, Pitino is fired because he has ZERO control over his assistant coaches, who go out of their way to break NCAA rules, and in the last case, was caught on FBI undercover surveillance video saying "we have to be careful because we are on probation already".

THAT is fireable. And that is taking Pitino totally at his word.

But if you honestly believe Pitino knew nothing about this, you're naïve.

The second instance involved an assistant who was hired into his first college gig ever. You think he's going to "free lance" an effort to get a shoe company to arrange for a $100,000 payment to a recruits family WITHOUT the head coaches knowledge???? If so, he has balls bigger than an elephant.

Either way ... Pitino should be fired. He either knew of these things, or he can't control the assistants he hires to follow NCAA rules.

David Padgett is coaching well and by doing so, he is making a case for being named the permanent head coach.

I don't think that right now, he has done enough to totally lay claim to that job now. But luckily, he has a lot more season to go to continue to show why he should be.

Lastly ... if the choice was between two people - David Padgett and Kenny Payne, it's a no brainer -- DP all the way. I love Kenny Payne, but DP has 18 more games head coaching experience, and that will only grow as the season goes on. Let Kenny show the world he can be a head coach, before we anoint him the head coach of a Top 7 All Time basketball program.

I don't think that it will come down to just two people however. And that -- even with NCAA sanctions coming -- there will be a lot of interest in this position.

Coaches know they have to win to keep their job and get the big money. They are not going to get 4 or 5 years to develop their system like coach K did. With major NCAA sanctions looming or in place, the kind of coach that Louisville wants is going to say no. That doesn't mean Louisville isn't still a good job. A top tier coach isn't going to endure 3 or 4 years of sanctions just to get fired because he had a mediocre record.

Padgett has demonstrated he has some in-game coaching skills. Louisville might do well to name him as coach so he can start recruiting. When all this shakes out they could have a good coach on their hands or they will be in a solid position to go after the big name they want.

This exactly.^^^
Now there is still a lot of season left but so far he has demonstrated that he can coach very well. And the players are listening to his teachings.

RE: David Padgett
Let’s see what happens with the NCAA appeal. Then let’s also see what restrictions the next coach and AD have. Surely the current BoT isn’t just gonna say....”we trust ya”!
Let’s see who the permanent AD will be due to those restrictions.
I like DP and think he has done a great job based on the circumstances. Gonna leave the next hire for the man or woman willing to work for the current BoT.
FWIW, Pitino had to go. 98% chance he is totally innocent imho but 2 strikes in this environment and he probably was willing to leave on his own for the good of the school. Approached correctly and he probably would have. After all, he has the program on his shoulder.
I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the BoT (who admittedly know nothing of athletics) didn’t go ahead and hire someone full time though. Sounds like something they would do.

That being said, David is doing great! Coach Pitino has a history of producing quality coaches.

DP has done an exceptional job, except for 1 game, & should be on the list of candidates but the UofL should perform a thorough search. I like Padgett but we can't forget Davis at IU & Calhouns replacement at UCONN as examples of the risk of hiring inexperienced coaches. Padgett has shown potential as a HC but that is only part of the job. If the rumors of Mack being interested are true then he should be on the short list. Whoever the next coach is he has to be given the chance to work through the impending sanctions.

RE: David Padgett
First and foremost a President and then an AD will have to be hired before a HC. If we went and hired a HC before hand the new AD will always have it in his back pocket of a built in excuse of this not being his or her hire. I’m not sure if Tyra will get the AD job, but a President has to be hired 1st and then a AD 2nd before the HC.

Personally my list of HC’s I’m hoping is looked at is Mack, Smart, White, Promm and Padgett. I don’t think Louisville should be DP’s 1st actual job, but he has shown enough to merit an interview and who knows he could be the next HC, but I don’t think it happens for him here at Louisville once the AD is named.

:stirthepot:Padgett is currently in 2nd place in the ACC. He has won at Notre Dame. And he has not used hookers, paid for players or screwed anybody in a public restaurant! Plus he has beaten a Top 10 ranked team. I for one like having Padgett over Pitino! 07-coffee3

As a Louisville fan I don't know what to say. I was raised on basketball & formula and to me every game is important (esp. conference) because you need many quality ones to make the tourney. And I am totally loving what Coach Padgett is doing.

But I guess you are a bigger football guy???

I'm not Maize ... but I am sorta like him. I pay attention to the bigger name out-of-conference opponents in Nov, and Dec in hoops. But I really don't get into college basketball until conference play starts. I am solidly into it now. But really, it's after bowl season is over.

And March is fantastic --- all the games ... even some of the NIT games ...

I'm beginning to become a college baseball fan too ... I felt the tug of excitement the other day, for the season coming. That will totally take over when March Madness ends. But I will follow along with box scores and what-not before then too.
